Position Focus:

Research Systems is a new unit within the Health Sciences Information Technology (HSIT) team providing research compute and IT support for the academic research enterprise across Yale School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and School of Nursing. The Director provides daily operational and strategic oversight over the following functional areas of responsibility: Strategic and operational oversight over all high-risk research computing infrastructure platforms, software and data managed or co-managed by HSIT, ITS, YCRC, or YNHHS. Provide comprehensive support and consultations with implementing specialized research technology needs including storage, high performance computing, cloud (AWS, Azure, Google), virtual environments and/or designing and building new services and infrastructure. Advancing fast, scalable, high performance and reliable IT services & solutions for all Health Sciences research faculty & staff within the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Public Health. Collaborates with Sr. leadership across the schools and departments to determine workforce and staffing plans necessary to accomplish department and program goals and objectives; ensure that high quality, innovative system solutions to the basic science and clinical research faculty and staff are being architected and implemented in a timely manner to satisfy current and future research technology needs. Stays abreast of industry trends and develops strong relationships with technology providers and colleagues at peer academic research institutions. Actively invests in the development of their staff.

As a supervisor, this position oversees Research Systems support staff and their deployment across the enterprise to assist with proprietary lab equipment and instrument connections to computing systems, scientific software, research data storage needs, niche computational services, and providing various facets of research desktop support. This position will leverage relationships and partner with multiple stakeholders across the Yale research enterprise (including ITS, YCRC, YNHH, ORA, and other functional areas) to ensure University goals are achieved. The position will be expected to work closely with the Information Security Office (ISO), Compliance and other teams to design and implement effective security and role-based authorization standards and practices in conjunction with Yale and YNHH InfoSec and modern industry standards. The Director provides strategic vision, leadership and execution for advanced research computing services and cloud enablement to support the Health Sciences research community and advance the competitiveness and success of its research enterprise. Ensure that the current and strategic technology support needs of the health sciences campus are met, while adhering to established staffing and budget thresholds. Advance the future technology support goals of the organization, serve as an advisor to a myriad of initiatives, and participate in large projects to ensure the appropriate technology support approach is used and the required resources are allocated. Support strategic initiatives prioritized by senior leadership across the health sciences campus supporting the technology needs of the clinical, research, education, and administrative mission. Collaborate with key executive sponsors, business stakeholders, and staff to ensure the technology support needs of the health sciences campus are met. Manages, mentors, trains, and leads a team of regular full-time and contractor staff, guiding them to work effectively in deploying and integrating technology support services to the health sciences campus.

Essential Duties

Collaborates with senior leadership to determine overall staffing levels to meet business objectives; responsible for managing budgets and/or financial risk. 7. Collaborates with department and/or university leadership to develop and implement strategic and operational goals, objectives and fiscal strategy and controls.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree and ten years of experience or equivalent education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Experience in an academic medical center or academic health system environment with specialized research compute needs; able to translate research faculty needs into comprehensive technology solutions.
