Job Summary:

Yale School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and organized Pathology Assistant to support the Surgical Pathology Gross Room team. This role will work under the supervision of the Specimen Receiving, Frozen Section, Gross Room Senior Manager and will be responsible for assisting pathologists with gross description and dissection of tissue removed at surgery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform gross description and dissection of tissue removed at surgery.
  • Assist with frozen section examinations, including preparation and staining of sections and summarizing patient medical history.
  • Assist pathologists in ascertaining proper legal authorization and patient medical charts, and confer with attending pathologists to identify special procedures to be utilized during examination.
  • Coordinate autopsy services, including supervision of laboratory personnel and maintaining an orderly working area.
  • Prepare and present at weekly clinical conferences, ensuring large cases are accurately transcribed.
  • Interact with surgical staff and surgeons to ensure timely delivery of samples from the operating room to the Surgical Pathology Gross Room for tissue procurement.
  • Update and maintain database of tissue collection and usage.
  • Prepare and provide monthly reports to the Department Chief or Manager.

Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Health Science in Pathology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to function both independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly motivated and highly organized.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle human specimens.
  • Flexibility to move between Bridgeport Hospital and Yale New Haven Hospital as work warrants.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred experience with MAC and IBM computer systems.

Certifications:

  • Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board or Eligible to be certified within 90 days of hire.
