St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute offers a clinical practicum in mental health. All practicum are nine-month training experiences. The approximate start date is September th and the approximate end date is May th, subject to some variation based on the student’s academic schedule. Practicum experiences are typically 9- hours per week. We do not offer a three-month or one-semester practicum. 

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) is an evidence-based treatment informed by over years of clinical and experimental research. RO-DBT targets a variety of disorders characterized by excessive self-control, often referred to as overcontrol. RO-DBT practicum students are provided ongoing training in evidence-based treatments , led by RO-DBT Clinical Director Gregory Peebles, LPC, DBTC.

Practicum student application deadline is February , 4, with a notification date of March , 4.


Qualifications

Qualifications:  Students must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in clinical or counseling psychology, clinical social work, or another mental health discipline. Number of Positions : One to two Hours/Schedule : Placement requirement is nine to ten hours per week. Attempts are made to devise schedules that accommodate each student’s additional academic commitments. Starting/Ending Dates : All practicum are nine-month training experiences. The approximate start date is September th and the approximate end date is May th, subject to some variation based on the student’s academic schedule. We do not offer a three-month or one-semester practicum. Clinical Responsibilities : Students will administer psychological interventions under the direction of a licensed provider and other licensed mental health professionals. In addition, students may co-lead therapy groups, attend and participate in group supervision and clinical rounds, and conduct intake screenings. Students are also invited to attend all continuing education programs provided at the Institute. Supervision : All students will receive one to two hours, per week, of group supervision by a licensed provider. Regularly scheduled individual supervision is typically provided by postdoctoral fellows in clinical psychology. The hours and frequency of supervision depend upon the number of hours involved in the student’s practicum. Students will also receive input and supervision from a multidisciplinary team of professionals on a case-by-case basis. Funding : SLBMI does not provide a stipend for students. Occasionally, students have been able to obtain outside funding. Research Opportunities : The practicum is a clinical experience and research is not required. However, opportunities are available for participation in research for those who are interested.
