GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Student Success Coach will help students in the Recovery Support Specialist certificate program at Illinois Tech to identify barriers to success and resources for overcoming those barriers. The Coach will engage students in person-centered, holistic conversations to help them articulate their goals, problem solve, develop action plans, and provide accountability to enhance their success and increase student retention.

The Recovery Support Specialist Certificate Program is a grant funded peer certification program within the psychology department. It aims to train peer providers who then go on to work in a variety of mental health and substance use treatment related settings. This job involves responsibilities such as direct student contact and engagement (program recruitment, individual student planning, serving as an advisor for students, providing mentorship and career development opportunities etc.), maintaining documentation and confidentiality (maintain advisee files, completion of confidentiality and standards trainings, navigation of software for documentation and management, etc.), and Engaging in professional development opportunities (attend peer support trainings/meetings, attend monthly advisory board meetings, bimonthly faculty meetings, and weekly program meetings, plan and facilitate workshops and in-person residency, secure relationships with internship sites and train them)

COMMUNICATIONS This position requires written, verbal, and electronic communication with students, faculty, and staff at Illinois Tech and consistent communication with potential and existing internship sites. The student success coach will also be involved in recruiting to the CRSS program and contacting community leaders and organizations involved in mental health and substance use disorder recovery. CUSTOMER SERVICE This position provides customer service in the form of advisement to students within the CRSS program who are paying tuition to Illinois Tech. Relationships with students are built through individual meetings at least three times per semester, where the Student Success Coach will engage students in person-centered, holistic conversations to help them articulate their goals, problem-solve, develop action plans, and provide accountability to enhance their success. The student success coach will conduct study groups, review sessions, and academic support groups as needed. Special Schedule Requirements • Expected to work one evening per week and two Saturdays per semester (including during the summer)
• The position will be hybrid, with an expectation of at least half of the hours being spent in person on Mies campus, located in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago on the southside.
• Occasional (3-4 times per year) travel in the community to visit internship sites, trainings, or community events. Qualifications Education & Experience • Have a CRSS or CPRS certificate in Illinois or be eligible to obtain one within three months of hire
• At least two years of experience working in peer support (mental health or substance use) is preferred
• Experience in customer service and/or student support services preferred

• Ability to independently navigate with technology, including email, shared documents, learning management systems, and word-processing software
• Highly organized with attention to detail SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY This position has no direct reports or supervision duties. Physical Environment and Requirements Physical requirements consistent with office work. The position is housed in the Psychology Department at the Center for Health Equity, Education, and Research (CHEER) on Illinois Tech’s campus. Must be able to travel within campus and, at times, within the local Chicago area for networking/internship site visits. Certifications and Licenses List any certifications or licenses that are either required or helpful in performing the job, designating whether required or preferred. • Serve as primary advisor for all students in the program by meeting with each student at least three times per semester
• Engage students in person-centered, holistic conversations to help them articulate their goals, problem solve, develop action plans, and provide accountability to enhance their success
• Provide mentorship and career development opportunities to students
• Assist students in obtaining support through hands-on assistance and referrals to university resources/supports and external supports as needed, including financial assistance
• Host weekly office hours for students in the early morning or evening hours
• Conduct study groups, review sessions, and academic support groups as needed Percentage Of Time 70 Key Responsibility • Systematically monitor student progress and maintain student advisee files

• Plan and facilitate supplemental workshops and in-person residency days twice per semester
• Attend the program’s monthly peer advisory board meeting, bimonthly faculty meetings, and weekly program meetings
• Provide training to internship sites and internship supervisors once per semester
• Advocate with university personnel to problem-solve student issues
