JOBSUMMARY

Thisposition . provides the first line of public service, and ensures thatlibraries are open at appropriate times. The Library Services Assistant connects patrons with appropriatesources, services, spaces, interfaces, or staff members to meet their researchneeds, and helps ensure that resources are organized and accessible. This position also accommodates collectionmaintenance work normally conducted by the Technical Services Department at themain library in Tahlequah, but that must be done on-site in Broken Arrow.

MAJOR DUTIES

Answers telephone and greets patrons. Provides directional information and assistance.
Provides basic assistance to patrons using library technology and equipment.
Assists patrons in locating resources.
Assists with maintenance of library catalog.
Assists with maintenance of serials.
Answers routine reference inquiries and refers patrons with complex informational needs to appropriate Research and Instructional Services librarians.
Searches, interprets and verifies bibliographic records or other data on automated systems.
Participates in collection shifting.
Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Approach-ability and knowledge of library sources and services.
Excellent one-on-one teaching skills and knowledge of the latest library interfaces.
Knowledge of circulation processes and basic knowledge of the library’s classification systems.
Requires precision, knowledge of specialized interfaces, and basic knowledge of cataloging rules and practices. Requires high attention to detail.

SUPERVISORYCONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat generalinstructions; many aspects of the work are covered specifically, but theemployee must use some judgment. The supervisor spot-checks work as it is beingdone for compliance with procedures and patron satisfaction.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department and university policies andprocedures, including circulation, reserve, and interlibrary loan policies. Inaddition, this position must utilize cataloging rules, and serials acquisitionsand binding procedures. These guidelinesare generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation inapplication. Guidelines for communication with patrons require frequentinterpretation, based on patron needs and situational flexibility.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of related administrative and client services duties. The need for tactful communication and occasional conflicts between the imperative to satisfy patrons and the need to provide effective stewardship of library resources may contribute to the complexity of the great variety in books and serials practices also complicates the work.

The purpose of this position is to provide effective library services to students, faculty and other library clients.Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, students, faculty, campus police, facilities workers, and members of the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while standing or walking, and while intermittently sitting at a desk, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects.

The work is typically performed indoors in a library may expose the employee to dust.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENTRESPONSIBILITY

Thisposition has no direct supervisory responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of a high school diploma.

Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.Experience with public service and/or prior library experience is beneficial but not necessary. Training is provided by the Broken Arrow Library Director and library faculty.Previous experience as a part time student assistant is common; individuals without this experience would require additional training.

Somecollege coursework is preferred.
