About the Position

The Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Services (AD-MSS) leads initiatives and programs supporting Western’s strategic goals in equity, excellence, and inclusion for our students. The AD-MSS will support and lead an excellent team of professional staff and student employees. The AD-MSS will develop and lead co-curricular programs and create inclusive spaces supporting students’ retention and holistic development. This will include developing programs which center racial and ethnic identities, experiences, and histories, with a focus on marginalized and intersecting identities. These programs will provide opportunities for transformational learning, develop students’ skills in intercultural communication, community building, conflict resolution, and offer inclusive celebrations.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

Program management and advisement (40%)

Deliver programs that foster positive identity development, build thriving multicultural community, advance retention and satisfaction, and cultivate leadership for Western students.  Design and implement student orientation and ongoing leadership development training and programming for the Office of Multicultural Student Services. Develop and supervise implementation of community building events for MSS that increase student engagement with the Multicultural Center and ADEI Unit more broadly. Collaborate with colleagues in the ADEI Unit and across Enrollment and Student Services to develop and facilitate programming focused on positive identity development, retention and academic achievement, leadership development, intercultural dialogue, and social justice education centering BIPOC students.  Serve on committees, task forces, and work groups on campus and in the broader Bellingham community to improve equity and inclusion of BIPOC students.

Supervision (35%)

Recruit, onboard, supervise, and conduct constructive performance reviews for professional staff.  Directly supervise a growing team of professional staff members including, but not limited to, the Coordinator of the Black Student Coalition and the Ethnic Student Center Club Advisor and Program Manager. Guide all supervisees’ work to further departmental and unit mission and goals. Foster a professional work environment that is collaborative, caring, and supports student and staff well-being. Support the professional development of professional staff and student employees. Manage regular departmental meetings and communications to facilitate information sharing, collaborative decision-making, and ongoing learning. Contribute to planning of unit-wide team meetings that foster interdepartmental collaboration, communication, and learning.

Administration, budget, and space management (20%)

Ensure compliance with applicable university policies and procedures, including record retention requirements. Collaborate with division colleagues in development of policies and procedures that support accessible, equitable, and inclusive engagement in student clubs and activities.  In collaboration with the Director of Multicultural Student Services, develop and present department budget proposals, including for the Ethnic Student Center, Black Student Coalition, and future programs. Collaborate with staff to manage budgets. Operate within budget guidelines and use organization resources effectively. Responsible for approximately $, annually.  Collaborate with the Director on annual planning and assessment for the Office of Multicultural Student Services. Manage the collection and evaluation of program data. Prepare reports evaluating program outcomes and effectiveness.  Work with colleagues within and outside the Viking Union to address maintenance, information technology, and other facility needs for the Multicultural Center.

Other duties (5%)

Participate in professional development regarding access, diversity, equity, and inclusion that advances abilities to best supervise staff and develop and administer programs centering students with marginalized identities.  Manage and update the Multicultural Center lending library. Other duties as assigned.  Required Qualifications Master’s degree  Five years of increasingly responsible professional experience working in programs related to access, diversity, equity, and inclusion, including significant relevant experience in higher education.  Experience effectively advising students and/or young adult leaders to support their leadership development, including demonstrated success providing culturally responsive advising services to BIPOC students.  At least two years of experience supervising professional staff and student employees. Experience advising student clubs and organizations. Experience designing and delivering programming and trainings that advance positive identity development and build leadership skills for students who hold multiple marginalized identities.  Demonstrated ability to engage students of diverse identities in intercultural learning and dialogue.  Strong small and large group facilitation skills and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to perform job responsibilities collaboratively with colleagues and students across departments and disciplines. Experience developing and managing budgets.  Knowledge of student leadership and student development theories and their applications in practice.  Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, excellent professional judgment, and the ability to make decisions that align with organizational mission and goals.  Demonstrated skills and experience in strategic planning and assessment of programs, services, and/or student learning outcomes.  Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a field related to job responsibilities, for example: Student Affairs Administration, Education, Ethnic or Cultural Studies, or Psychology.  Demonstrated leadership experience in multicultural services or identity-based resource centers in higher education.  Fluency in a second language (other than English).
