Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Fixed Assets Manager, the Senior Accountant performs complex accounting work and/or directs the work of other accountants in support of accounting functions including Cost Accounting, Fixed Assets, Prepaids, Advances for construction, Contributions in aid of construction (CIAC), Accounts Payable, Cash, and Accounts Receivable.

Specific Responsibilities

Prepare daily cash entry and update cash projection worksheet.Record daily cash receipts, disbursements, transfers and other activities to appropriate general ledger accounts. Track cash receipts affecting extension deposit accounts and summarize monthly activities of receipts, refunds, transfers and other adjustments. Processing 40-year contract refunds. Calculate extension deposit refunds to cost/cost due and initiate payment processing of refunds or generate invoice for cost dues. Maintain and update extension deposit Reimbursables database and ascertain that balances tie to General Ledger by performing monthly reconciliations. Research and respond to inquiries and process contract assignments upon request. Ensure SOX compliance with key controls and accurate GAAP financial reporting, fulfilling internal and external reporting requirements. Record and track miscellaneous accounts receivable and facilitate collection from overdue accounts as necessary. Prepares journal entries and assists in month-end close process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting; posts, balances, and reconciles the general ledger and subsidiary accounts.  Analyze accounting data in the capital asset system, subsidiary, and general ledger to review and highlight variances, trends, exceptions and discrepancies, taking action as appropriate. Identify and document accounting treatment for developer deposits. Ensure historical reference by documenting procedures and decisions, maintaining required documentation, and providing documents as necessary. Maintain roll forwards of advances and CIAC. Establish and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with other departments to ensure the accuracy of accounting treatment and records.  Prepare various audit schedules and provide documentation to auditors as necessary. Fully cross trained and serve as back-up to utility plant accountant. Assist with various ad hoc projects as needed.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, practices, and procedures. Detail oriented, ability to work independently, analytical and highly organized. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to organize and prioritize work and meet critical deadlines. Ability to perform simple to moderately complex accounting activities. Skill in making arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy, preparing clear, accurate and concise reports and correspondence. Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook. Familiarity with JE Edwards E1 and/or PowerPlan is a plus. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Required Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting or other related field. Five years of diversified general accounting experience. Experience with month-end and quarter-end close processes.
