PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide, as a member of the counseling department staff, a comprehensive guidance program to students and specifically provide services to meet the special needs of the assigned caseload; consult with teachers, parents and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students’ educational, social, and personal needs; and provide support to other school educational programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university

Valid Texas school counselor certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development

Working knowledge of educational programs and the ability to guide students through the programs

Effective interpersonal skills

Excellent communications skills- verbal, and written

Ability to develop a schedule yet maintain flexibility

Knowledge of principals of developmental guidelines

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff

Work Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computerand peripherals; Microsoft Office and various computer programs

Posture: Prolonged walking, standing and/or sitting; bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including keyboarding and writing; reaching

Regular attendance is an essential function.

Minimum Experience:

Three years’ successful classroom teaching experience as evidenced by performance evaluations

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Consult and counsel with students, teachers, parents, and administrative staff concerning student’s needs in resolving personal and educational problems. Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data. Maintain student records as required and protect each student’s confidentiality. Keep accurate documentation and records. Serve as liaison between school and community. Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems such as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
