This individual in this position will report to the Manager of Information Technology Services
(ITS) and will be working part-time (0.5 FTE) for the Information Technology Department as a Technical Service Technician (TST) and part-time (0.5 FTE) for the Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC) as a Simulation Technology Specialist (STS) for the Fresno campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The TST’s responsibilities include support for the use of computer and audio-visual equipment on the Fresno Campus for faculty, staff, students and guests. In addition, the TST serves as a liaison of the IT Department to the Fresno Campus, providing services equivalent to those offered at the Oakland campus.

The Simulation Technology Specialist’s (STS) primary responsibilities are to

Provide technology support for faculty, staff and students as they teach and learn in all environments over which the HSSC has oversightOperate and maintain all HSSC simulation equipment and technology including audio-visual equipment.Serve as the HSSC’s primary operational liaison to SMU’s Information Technology Services and Media Services departmentsPrepare and manage supplies and equipment inventory for simulation and skills lab activities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Simulation & Technical Responsibilities

Support the Implementation of established SBL Sessions

Serve as a simulator operator by programming/reprogramming, testing, and running scenario software, working collaboratively with facultyEnsure appropriate set up of the simulation environment and equipment for sessions, using curricular tools/documents created by faculty for the sessionMaintain proficiency in the use and operation of the audio-visual system utilized in the simulation area—the level of proficiency must be sufficient enough to act as a resource to non-HSSC faculty. Assist faculty with accessing and operating the system. Interface with the AV vendor to ensure upgrades have been installed successfully and the system is working appropriately. Maintain ability to troubleshoot system problems and collaborate with the AV vendor in identifying solutions.

Technical Assistance and Training for Faculty

Maintain proficiency in the use and operation of different simulation technologies ranging from (but not limited to) anatomic models/task trainers to screen-based simulations to full body patient simulators. The level of proficiency must be sufficient enough to act as a resource to non-HSSC faculty.Maintain current knowledge or access to knowledge of product lines of vendors in the simulation industry domain.Maintain current knowledge or access to knowledge related to the operation of equipment used in the HSSCProvide technical assistance, support, and ongoing training to faculty and staff in the use of simulation and AV equipment.Work collaboratively with the HSSC Operations Manager and Simulation Educators to plan and implement strategies for ongoing technology training for appropriate HSSC customers.

Service and Maintenance of Simulation Equipment and Task Trainers

Conduct ongoing maintenance of all simulation equipment and task trainers, including cleaning and repairing, assuring that all equipment is maintained in good working order at all times.Install software and hardware upgrades and maintain functionality of manikin components as directed by manufacturer support.Interface with the AV vendor to ensure upgrades have been installed successfully and the system is working appropriately. Able to troubleshoot system problems and collaborate with the AV vendor in identifying solutions.Interface with the equipment manufacturers regarding equipment troubleshooting and systems problems; maintain record of repairs & updates.Collaborate with SMU IT Department & Media Services as necessary to ensure computers and AV equipment are maintained and operating efficiently.

Inventory Advisement

Maintain proficiency in the use and operation of different simulation technologies ranging from (but not limited to) anatomic models/task trainers to screen-based simulations to full body patient simulators.Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging technologies that can enhance the delivery of SBL.Consults with and makes recommendations to the HSSC team regarding simulation equipment purchases.

Clinical Skills Lab Supply & Equipment Management

Maintains a supply inventory for simulation and skills supply rooms. Meets regularly with the Fresno Simulation Educator, Academic Director and the Campus Operations Manager to determine if new supplies and/or equipment should be added to the inventory. Maintains an inventory of all medical equipment, task trainers and simulation equipment. 

Identifies broken medical equipment, task trainers and simulation equipment. If not able to repair, then notifies the HSSC Operations Manager to request repairs or new equipment (both medical and simulation). Responsible for pulling supplies for all clinical skills labs Maintains accurate inventory of supplies using the HSSC Inventory Control Management program and communicates to the HSSC Operations Manager to order stock when supplies are running low Sets up the task trainers & provides the equipment, e.g. IV pumps, as requested by faculty for skills labs Cleans and puts away task trainers after labs conclude. Inspects the space after the faculty departed and puts extra supplies back into inventory

Technical Service Technician Responsibilities (50%)

Respond to technical support requests from University users, providing assistance in a timely manner. Maintain and record history on all requests. Diagnose and repair hardware and software problems that customers are experiencing, via phone, video-conferencing, email or in person. Provide a high level of service for all business-related hardware. Perform business-related hardware repairs and services; assist users in the proper maintenance and standard operational use of computer and multimedia classroom equipment. Provide technical support for business-related and classroom-specific software applications. Adhere to a routine maintenance program for all computer systems to assure consistency of orderly and efficient working environments. Assist faculty and students in the shooting, editing and completing of final production of video files specifically for educational purposes across all SMU academic programs. Assist faculty in editing videos recorded for educational purposes and uploading them to appropriate applications for dissemination to intended audience. Perform hands-on work in SMU campus locations (Fresno) under remote supervision. Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of patient simulation, technologies, and applications preferred.Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to simulator functions.Knowledge of audio/video equipment operationsProficient in MS software applications, including MS Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.Ability to learn new software and hardware quickly and independentlyAbility to assess, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment failures in a timely mannerSelf-motivated, requiring little to no supervision and the ability to work effectively in a team environmentFlexibility and adaptability in dynamic environment; able to work evenings/weekends on an as needed basis.Excellent customer service skillsExcellent written and oral communication skillsDemonstrates commitment to Service ExcellenceDemonstrates organizational & prioritizing skillsGood judgment and creative thinking to solve daily problems.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

An Associate Degree in computer science and/or a healthcare-related field is acceptable. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.At least 3-5 years of related experience in computer science and/or healthcare preferred.A+ Certification desiredExperience providing technical support for personal computersExperience providing technical support for Macintosh computers desired1 to 2 years' related professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience required
