Schuster Theater Assistant

Erie, United States Gannon University Full time

Position Summary

Career Readiness Learning Objectives:

TEAMWORK: Theatre is the ultimate team sport. Technical Assistants at Schuster Theater work in tandem with the faculty Technical Director to create everything seen and heard in the theater’s productions. They also work with the Director, Adjuncts, Guest Artists, Student volunteers, and Community volunteers. The sheer size and weight of many scenic elements and lighting projects necessitates teamwork for successful completion. Large and complicated tasks are divided into smaller teams according to skill and interest, when possible, with everyone working toward the common goals of safety and successful storytelling. COMMUNICATION: A Schuster Theater Technical Assistant will clearly and effectively communicate with The Technical Director, faculty, and volunteers to complete the large and complex tasks involved with technical theater production. Communication in this role takes place in formal production meetings, written reports, promotional materials, and, in visual form, through designs. Informal, yet effective communication is expected as a constant conversation between team members and the technical director. A Schuster Theater Technical Assistant will become comfortable communicating in person, speaking on the phone, via email and messaging, and through visual presentation. CRITICAL THINKING: Every day in the Schuster Theater presents a new puzzle to be solved in the production of a show or the maintenance of the shops. With training and under supervision, Technical Assistants are often given goals to achieve with the freedom to figure out the process. As they are ready, they are given increased freedom in the decision-making processes during projects. Ownership and involvement in the daily tasks at the theater demand creativity and problem-solving and provide a meaningful sense of accomplishment when a project is completed. LEADERSHIP: The Technical Assistants develop leadership skills as they progress through training. The amount of work that must be accomplished at the theater often demands the help of unskilled student volunteers which the Technical Assistants help to lead. Independence is bolstered through the successful completion of increasingly difficult projects. Technical Assistants must also learn to find the balance between self-reliance and knowing when to hold for assistance or further instruction from the Technical Director who splits time between several areas of the theater and may not be readily available. Technical Assistants develop a healthy dose of confidence in their leadership ability while learning there is strength in asking for help. CAREER AND SELF-DEVELOPMENT: Schuster Theater Technical Assistants have more hands-on work time in Scenery, Costuming, Properties, Lighting, and Sound Technology and Design than any other theatre students. They receive constant training in both small group and individual settings. Technical Assistants have ample opportunity for the repetitive practice necessary to refine skills with tools and materials that are not readily available or practical outside of the theatre. They often develop an interest in a particular area of technical theater and choose to focus their attention on that shop. This system develops well-rounded theater technicians with specialties/areas of expertise. Schuster Theater Technical Assistants are often requested as well-paid over hire workers for the Warner Theater Broadway Series and as valuable volunteers in the area community theaters. EQUITY AND INCLUSION: Theater has always been a place for those who were not accepted elsewhere to find a place. Schuster Theater upholds that tradition. The Technical Assistants are exposed to and accept the wide range of beliefs, traditions, and social norms that reside in the theater. The Schuster season regularly chooses and hosts thought-provoking material. Everyone is allowed to believe what they believe, and everyone should feel safe.

The Schuster Theater Technical Assistants work closely with the faculty Technical Director in the design and build of the season’s shows, special events, and fundraisers as well as maintain the day-to-day functioning of the scene shop, costume shop, and storage areas throughout the building.

Many of the tasks at the introductory level require only a basic understanding of theater and a willingness to learn. Responsibilities on any day could include but are not limited to Painting, Carpentry, Installing Scenery, Moving Scenery, Crafting, Taking Measurements, Sewing, Wig Styling, Costume Laundry, Climbing, Lifting (50lbs alone max), Hanging Lights, Programming Lights, Running Cable, Speaker Placement, Run Crew, Box Office, Concessions, Publicity, Social Media, Administrative Assistance/Clerical Assistance, Cleaning, Sorting, Organizing, Delivering Items.

Whenever possible, a student’s interest in an area of technical theater is given preference.

Required Qualifications Applicants should have a passion for theater and a strong interest in technical theatre. A general introductory level knowledge of theater is required. This role requires a desire to learn, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic. The ideal candidate is comfortable working as part of a team and independently. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary for show weekends. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in at least one area of technical theater, or successful completion of Scene Technology (ARTS 112) is preferred.
