Reporting to the Manager, Social, Environmental, and Regulatory Approvals (SERA), the Lead, Regulatory Approvals position is responsible for developing and implementing regulatory strategies that meet project schedules and priorities.

The successful candidate will provide guidance on applicable regulations within the US and State regulatory environments for Alaska-based mineral projects at various stages of development, from advanced exploration to closure.

While Anchorage, US, is the preferred location for this position, it is negotiable for the successful candidate.

Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures

  • Develop regulatory strategies, in consultation with leads for social and environmental disciplines, to complete environmental reviews and permitting processes to meet project needs and timelines

  • Develop and implement a permitting plan specific to the Aktigiruq and Anarraaq Extension Program in collaboration with Teck’s Community Relations, US Land and Legal, Exploration, Red Dog Operations, and Project Development Group teams

  • Review planned social and environmental baseline plans to ensure data will fulfill regulatory and permitting requirements; review permit applications prior to submission, considering applicable regulations and proposed management plans and monitoring programs

  • During permit application review stages, coordinate, prepare, and track responses to regulatory comments and information requests

  • Use available Management Systems to manage regulatory approvals that have been received, record required activities and conditions for compliance, ensure timely compliance reporting, and document engagements with external groups, including regulatory agencies and communities of interest

  • Provide technical, administrative, and project management support (e.g., schedules, budgets, scope changes, risk log, document controls)

  • Create external correspondence with government agencies and property owners as warranted; build in-person relationships with regulators as needed

  • Prepare and present internal reports to senior management on the status of regulatory approvals, and complete other responsibilities as required or as assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma of Engineering or Science in environment, forestry, agronomy, biology, geology, public policy or related fields

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a natural resource industry. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered

  • Strong understanding of state and federal environmental assessment and permitting processes. Experience with these processes and obtaining approvals in Alaska, for mining or other resource or industrial projects, is considered an asset

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills in both formal and informal settings

  • Interest to learn and capability to grow project management skills and experience related to multidisciplinary projects and consulting teams

  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with SiteLine, SharePoint, power apps and extended Microsoft platforms is an asset

  • Valid driver’s license

  • USA Citizen or ability to work in the USA required; ability to travel to Vancouver, Anchorage, and Red Dog Mine approximately quarterly also required
