Position Summary The Controller is responsible for the accounting and disbursement functions of the University. The work involves supervising staff, external and internal financial reporting, preparation of financial statements and ensuring controls are in place to prevent fraud and waste of University financial resources. The Controller applies professional accounting principles and techniques to the transactions to ensure that the University’s financial statements are in accordance with GAAP. The Controller provides daily supervision of accounting staff, payroll and accounts payable, prepares accounting and financial reports for the University. The Controller provides support to the Vice President for Finance and Administration in the management of general accounting and treasury functions as needed. Essential Duties Supervise accounting, payroll and accounts payable staff and provide technical support to employees who maintain complex accounting records. Establish and monitor accounting policies/procedures that will ensure compliance with University accounting policies and procedures, including appropriate higher education industry accounting practices and FASB accounting guidance and standards (GAAP). Manage the monthly closing and reporting process. Creation and presentation of periodic financial reports and variance analysis. Work in collaboration with University Advancement for the accurate recording of gift agreements. Provide a periodic review, reconciliation and report of all gifts, contributions and pledges. Review and approve all entries prepared by the Accounting staff. Prepare high level account reconciliations. Oversee, review and approve bank services and transactions including merchant services, wire and ACH transfers. Review monthly endowment activity, including market values and reconciliations, spend rate calculations. Oversee the process to release net assets from restriction and draw based on annual spend budgets. Review and approve monthly reconciliation schedules prepared by the Accounting staff. Work closely with Financial Planning team to ensure that operational issues are addressed that impact the financial statements. Work with external auditors to coordinate the University’s annual financial audit, single audit, NCAA audit and tax return. Prepare and review audit requests and sample selections. Prepare the annual Financial Statements, including footnotes, for review by the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Oversee annual preparation of IPEDS report, Schedule of Expenditures and Federal Awards, Data Collection Form for the Single Audit and other annual surveys as needed. Consult with and provide customer support to University faculty and staff. Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of appropriate procedures and internal controls for those who perform finance related tasks (including but not limited to Advancement and Student Accounts Receivable). Create detailed and relevant reports to provide management with timely information in order to make informed decisions and to communicate with various stakeholders and University governing bodies as required. Communicate compliance and due diligence materials to bond trustee and external lenders as required by terms of loan agreements and bond documents. Foster professional development for staff in the Controller’s unit. Maintain CPA licensure. Secondary Responsibilities Performance of accounting and auditing projects as required. Assist in research, interpretation and application of new and existing accounting pronouncements. Identify opportunities to generate efficiencies and increase the effectiveness of the Accounting Operations. All other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Finance & Administration. # of Direct Reports 2-5 (to be determined) Required Qualifications B.S. or higher in Accounting, Finance, or related field, plus a minimum of six years of related professional experience; including exposure to not-for-profit accounting and reporting standards. Certified Public Accountant. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external constituents. Experienced supervisor committed to assisting team members continue to advance their careers and develop professionally. Demonstrated ability to effectively analyze complex Accounting data. Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar desktop software. Demonstrated success meeting deadlines in a fast paced environment. Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of La Salle University. Preferred Qualifications Previous related experience in a private college or university setting Demonstrated experience with Ellucian Banner Finance ERP Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours Early, late, or weekend hours may be required during peak times.
