Position Description

Instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement. The Specialty Instructor is responsible for leading group classes teaching the specific concepts and skills affiliated with each particular course design while maintaining the health and safety of each class participant.

Qualifications

This position will cover two branches: Ketchum (Downtown) YMCA & Anderson Munger Family YMCA

  • AGE: Eighteen years or older
  • SPECIALIZED SKILLS: Strong character values; communication skills
  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: Previous experience as a Pickleball Coach preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Responsibilities

Program Delivery

  • Create a welcoming environment by greeting members by name with a smile and eye contact.
  • Plan and lead sessions by implementing effective teaching methods, giving equal attention to all participants.
  • Teach course material in nutrition knowledge and weight loss concepts following the specified curriculum.
  • Responsible for administering professional and effective program-specific skills according to the course description.
  • Distribute handouts and class evaluations, if appropriate, and answer questions from participants during and after each session.
  • Administer retention questionnaires, tests, and surveys.
  • Develop program curriculum around improving class participants' journey.
  • Prepare and educate class participants on how to read and understand food labels.
  • Teach participants how to set SMART goals and to determine calories needed for healthy weight loss
  • Assess and guide participants to ensure progress towards goals is being met.
  • Communicate with supervisor on any issues of concern in regards to participants.

Member Engagement

  • Responsible for building small communities by facilitating connections with and between members.
  • Develop positive relationships with participants and provide motivational support and guidance to support members in their healthy living goals.
  • Encourage member involvement and promote accountability accountability.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to all member inquiries/needs.
  • Administer and collect progress reports.

Administration & Compliance

  • Set up and monitor class equipment, ensuring equipment remains in working condition. Report all equipment repair needs to the supervisor immediately.
  • Advise participants on program and class procedures and policies, as appropriate.
  • Record the number of participants per class for every class taught.
  • Complete additional projects and reports as required.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
  • Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, and Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Respect, Honesty and Responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.
  • Demonstrate competencies in and willingness to develop in the Cause Driven Leadership areas of mission advancement, collaboration, operational effectiveness and personal growth.
