The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, division of Hematology/Oncology is seeking a 100% Research Assistant. The Research Assistant will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory and performing research related activities within the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology/Oncology. This position will provide support by conducting experiments, collecting, and analyzing results, and performing operation duties related to acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
It is expected that as the research assistant gains experience with laboratory techniques and procedures, they will take on increased autonomy and collaboration with other laboratory members. They will also gradually increase the scientific level of their duties by adding experimental design and data analysis as well as preparation of materials for abstracts/reports/grant applications and manuscripts. This is a specified term position.
Duties to include:
Research
Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project. As individual skills develop, analyze literature to develop hypothesis for discussion with other researchers and/or principal investigator.Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations
Read and understand protocols. Arrange and plan daily activities to perform experimental procedures, assuring fidelity to protocols. Collect, record, and analyze data as instructed by the principal investigator. Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines. As individual skills develop test and evaluate current procedures; troubleshoot and analyze experimental protocols; propose modifications to other researchers and/or principal investigator; design new protocols with assistance from other researchers and/or principal investigator Maintain cell line cultures and isolate mononuclear cells from primary patient specimens using sterile techniques. Perform research activities related to the analysis of cell viability assays, including with primary patient specimens. Perform animal experiments including handling, weighing, and restraining mice; establishing xenografts via tail vein injections; administering various medications via intraperitoneal injections and/or oral gavage; performing mouse euthanasia; performing blood draws; harvesting tissues on euthanized mice; and maintaining mouse colony records. Perform cloning with construction and production of viral and non-viral vectors; use viral vectors to infect cells in culture. Perform flow cytometry experiments using cell lines, primary patient specimens, and patient-derived xenografts. Prepare cell lines and primary specimens for gene expression studies. Operate light microscopes and acquire microscopic imaging data, including confocal. Perform western blotting and other assays as needed for studies as instructed by the principal investigator.Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications
Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports, and maintain records of methods used. Prepare materials for reports to be written by faculty/staff on the research project. Present results at lab meetings. Prepare figures and methods for use in posters, manuscripts, and grant applications. Prepare abstracts according to instructions.Administrative and Project Management
Assist with IRB, IACUC, or similar protocol submissions as needed. Assist in documenting compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines. Track progress/success of research project.Facilities and Equipment Management
Assist with procurement of supplies and materials. May initiate purchasing requests, monitor accounts/expenditures; reconcile statements. Assist in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory and facility equipment.Supervision/Staffing
As skills develop, may train and/or provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling of students and newer employees.About the Department of Pediatrics:

About the Division of Hematology/Oncology:
The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at University of Iowa Children’s Hospital is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. It is part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a national consortium of pediatric cancer centers. The COG is well known for its new and innovative ways of treating childhood cancer. The division has a long history of success in bringing hope to patients with programs such as our blood and bone marrow transplant, comprehensive sickle cell program, and comprehensive hemophilia center.
The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols.
Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in a natural or health science field or discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior biomedical research experience in a related field. Demonstrated experience in basic molecular biology techniques. Demonstrated experience in sterile cell culture techniques. Ability to work well both independently and in a team setting. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse, equitable and inclusive work environment.Highly Desirable Qualifications
Experience caring for and handling mice. Experience using light and confocal microscopy. Experience performing flow cytometry on suspension cells.Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated experience with data entry and managing research databases according to best practice.Position and Application Details:
