Position Overview:

serves as a teaching laboratory assistant and research laboratory technician. Also monitors laboratory safety and serves as liaison to the Universitys Risk Management Committee on issues that relate to laboratory safety and OSHA/EPA compliance. Requires ability to set up laboratory experiments and oversee student work in a teaching laboratory. Assists in establishing and enforcing chemical hygiene and health compliance policies and procedures to ensure that the laboratories comply with local, state, and federal regulations. Performs additional technical scientific and professional work in support of the Universitys laboratory research programs. Duties include performing laboratory audits to recognize, evaluate, and control chemical or biological contaminants as a part of a comprehensive safety program that assures that Manchester University provides a safe and healthy work and learning environment for its students, faculty, and staff. Coordinates the monitoring, recording, and handling of hazardous materials with applicable outside agencies/vendors.

Essential job functions:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Sets up teaching laboratories and provides oversight and guidance during classroom laboratory activities.
  • Maintains cell lines and laboratory stocks.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and monitors laboratory inventories.
  • Provides technical support to research scientists.
  • Directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of campus laboratory safety programs, including hazardous waste management.
  • Consults with the Leadership Team, faculty, and staff to identify problems, develop improvements, and create and maintain quality standards in the research laboratories.
  • Conducts regular inspections of facilities, equipment, and hazardous work materials to ensure compliance with safety standards. Assures that Hazardous Waste Manifest, Material Safety Data Sheets, etc. are correctly processed in a timely manner and that all records are maintained in specified locations.
  • Develops and maintains programs to ensure standardization of control and disposal procedures.
  • Assures compliance with various federal, state, local, and industry-recognized rules, regulations, and procedures governing hazardous materials and safety that may impact Manchester University.
  • Regular and reliable attendance at the University during weekly scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.
Secondary Job Functions:
  • Provides applicable and necessary new employee/student orientations for laboratory safety.
  • Maintains detailed records associated with the specific duties within the safety program.
  • Participates in laboratory audits and follow-up inspections relating to safety.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in chemistry, biology, or related field. Masters Degree and experience in pharmacogenomics laboratory preferred.
  • Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical, or professional discipline.
  • Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of biological chemistry. Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and/or policies and procedures related to the laboratory. Knowledge of principles of storage and distribution of goods. Knowledge of applicable measurement and/or sampling methods and technologies.
  • Ability to work with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Capacity to apply principles of chemical hygiene to include recognition, evaluation, and control of recognized hazards.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English and ability to communicate with individuals over the phone or in person.
  • Works collaboratively in a team-based environment and maintains effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the College and University.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, and manage time.
  • Basic computer proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, e-mail, and Internet.
  • Commitment to continuous self-improvement and professional development.

Work schedule: This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Forty (40) hours per week (8:00 am-5:00 pm) will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the College, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be required occasionally.
