This position performs general corrections and detentions work with the responsibility of the custody, care and control of inmates.

This position helps maintain the overall safety, security and good functioning order of the Leon County Detention Facility.

The position exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations, often without immediate supervision.

The position adheres to the agency core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect and commitment to excellence.

To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in Florida Model Jail Standards, Jail Standard Operational Procedures and LCSO General Orders, officer safety, knowledge of geographical layout of the Leon County Detention Facility, defensive and control tactics, conflict resolution, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, problem solving and team building skills.

Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations and the application of such to the performance of the job. Knowledge of the geography and layout of the Leon County Detention Facility and its property including highly secured areas and exit access areas. Knowledge of first aid practices and the ability to render physical assistance to victims. Ability to conduct active patrolling and monitoring of all areas of the Leon County Detention Facility, which would include the ability to climb stairs. Ability to maintain custody, care and control of inmates. Operate a control panel to maintain and control doors and security of assigned areas. Operate a computer so that major systems can be maintained including but not limited to electronic logs, CJIS, FCIC and NCIC. Ability to resolve inmate disputes and subdue disorderly inmates if necessary. Perform proper search of inmates and their property including a strip search if necessary. Prevent penetrations, escapes and security breaches involving inmates or other unauthorized personnel. Ability to respond to a "man down" alarm in a quick and efficient manner. Demonstrate efficiency in fingerprinting persons manually and/or by using electronic fingerprint system. Ability to perform inmate intake, transfer and release processes and procedures. Testify at trials, hearings, grand juries and/or depositions truthfully, accurately and professionally. Adhere to and apply proper principles of officer safety. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Ability to cope with stressful situations and perform calmly under stressful conditions. Ability to work closely with others as a team. Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise and objective written and oral reports. Ability to enforce the law with firmness, tact and impartiality and to deal courteously with the public. Ability to maintain a level of physical conditioning to be able to physically subdue, restrain, and apprehend inmates. Ability to meet requirements of periodic in-service training in all high liability areas as well as all requirements to maintain the position's certification. Skill in calmly and systematically eliciting critical information from individuals whom may be injured and/or highly emotional. Ability to report to work timely, consistently and as scheduled. Ability to report to work in times of an emergency disaster as declared by local, state or federal officials or agencies. Ability to work rotating 8-12 hour shifts involving day-time and night-time hours as well as weekends. Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the work place. In compliance with 943.13 F.S., the position requires the employee to be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen of the United States, be of good moral character, must have completed a basic training program for Corrections approved by the CJSTC and pass the Florida certification examination. Must maintain a primary residence within Leon County or a county adjacent to Leon (Wakulla, Liberty, Gadsden, and Jefferson Counties in Florida, Thomas and Grady Counties in Georgia) and satisfy all disqualification factors outlined in the application for employment. Must possess a valid driver's license with a good driving history. (No more than two (2) moving violations in the last 12 months and refusal of a Blood Alcohol Content test within the last three (3) years.) The position requires the following in addition to certification requirements above:

High School Diploma or GED. Must be able to lift, push, carry or pull a minimum of 50 pounds independently. Must pass a Corrections PAT. Position has an increased risk of occupational exposure to hazardous and infectious materials. Must be available during times of emergencies or natural disasters. Position may require mandatory overtime as designed by administration.
