Position Title: Part-Time STEAM Program Coordinator (High School & Makerspace)
Classification: Non-Exempt, Part-Time
Reports To: Director of Behavioral Health & Education
Location: TURN Center – 4444 S. Evans, Chicago, IL
Job Summary
Bright Star Community Outreach (BSCO) is expanding its STEAM DREAM initiative with the addition of a new Makerspace at the TURN Center and an extension of programming to include high school students. The Part-Time STEAM Program Coordinator will support these exciting developments by coordinating out-of-school STEAM programming, managing the Makerspace, and helping lead BSCO's efforts to inspire the next generation of innovators.
This position will assist in the rollout of new high school programming and the integration of technology-driven activities, such as coding, graphic design, 3D printing, and cybersecurity, while continuing to support PK–8 STEAM programs.
Responsibilities
Program Coordination & Implementation
- Support the design, coordination, and implementation of BSCO's STEAM DREAM programming for PK–8 and high school students.
- Lead coordination of high school STEAM programming, beginning with weekend sessions (2025–26) and expanding to after-school programs (2026–27).
- Assist in the planning and setup of the TURN Center Makerspace, ensuring readiness for use by Fall 2025.
- Manage communication, scheduling, and logistics with students, families, and partner schools.
- Collaborate with the Director of STEAM Programs to ensure program quality and alignment with organizational goals.
Instructional & Staff Support
- Supervise and support STEAM instructors, volunteers, and instructional assistants.
- Partner with Bronzeville STEAM Teacher Institute participants to deliver engaging and age-appropriate lessons.
- Mentor and assist college students (University of Chicago and others) serving as instructional assistants.
Partnership & Outreach
- Build and maintain relationships with high school teachers and administrators across Bronzeville.
- Conduct surveys with teachers, students, and families to identify interest areas and unmet needs in local STEAM programming.
- Coordinate communication and outreach to strengthen community engagement and participation.
Operations & Makerspace Management
- Maintain and manage Makerspace equipment, including Apple computers, 3D printers, and related technology.
- Track inventory, manage supplies, and ensure safe, efficient use of the Makerspace.
- Develop and uphold safety procedures and best practices for student use.
Evaluation & Reporting
- Collect and organize program data, attendance, and outcome metrics.
- Support reporting for funders and internal evaluation.
- Assist in program improvement through reflection and data-informed decision-making.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Education, STEM/STEAM, or related field preferred.
- Experience coordinating or leading youth education programs (STEAM experience preferred).
- Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.
- Proficiency with technology and educational tools, including Apple systems, coding platforms, and 3D printing.
- Experience supervising staff or volunteers is a plus.
- Demonstrated commitment to youth empowerment and community engagement.
- Must be available for some evenings and weekends.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check required.
Schedule & Compensation
- Part-Time: Approximately 10–15 hours per week (flexible schedule with evenings/weekends).
- Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
