Primus Companies is a 53-year-old general contractor and construction management firm with deep roots across the Midwest and Southeast. We've completed work in 15 states and have been active in the Kansas City market for more than 11 years.
We focus on negotiated general contracting and construction management across healthcare, dental, and animal health, as well as light industrial, commercial office, retail, financial institutions, and senior housing/multifamily. This position builds on an established market presence, not a cold start.
Job Summary
Primus is seeking a driven, relationship-focused Business Development Professional to grow our presence in the Kansas City region. This role is responsible for generating negotiated general contracting and construction management opportunities, building relationships with owners and professional partners, and developing new work across multiple sectors. You will represent Primus in meetings, presentations, site visits, and early project planning.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a focused business development plan for the Kansas City market
- Build relationships with property owners, healthcare/dental/animal health groups, and commercial operators
- Identify and pursue opportunities in light industrial, office, retail, and financial sectors
- Establish and strengthen relationships with:
- Architects
- Engineers
- Developers
- Property owners
- Commercial/SBA/healthcare lenders
- Industry partners and industry referral partners
- Conduct meetings, site visits, presentations, and networking events
- Manage an active sales pipeline, track activities, and report progress
- Work with estimating and project teams to prepare proposals and budgets
- Support feasibility reviews and early project planning
- Represent Primus professionally in the Kansas City business community
What Success Looks Like (6–12 Months)
- Built a strong pipeline of qualified opportunities across multiple sectors
- Established ongoing, productive relationships with architects, engineers, developers, lenders, property owners, and industry referral partners who bring Primus into projects
- Generated consistent negotiated construction opportunities
- Met or exceeded activity and revenue targets
- Became a trusted first call for repeat clients in multiple verticals
Ideal Candidate
Experience
- Proven B2B sales success in one or more:
- Commercial construction or building materials/services
- Healthcare/dental/veterinary or medical device/capital equipment
- Commercial real estate, development, or CRE financial services
- High-ticket, long-sales-cycle industries (industrial services, SaaS/technology, commercial insurance)
Skills
- Strong prospecting and relationship-building abilities
- Able to influence owners, architects, engineers, lenders, and developers
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Highly self-motivated with strong follow-through
- Comfortable managing a sales pipeline and tracking key metrics
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree
- 5+ years of B2B sales experience
- Valid driver's license and acceptable MVR
- Experience preparing proposals, budgets/quotes, and reviewing agreements
- Industry experience in construction, healthcare/dental, or real estate development preferred
Compensation
- Base salary: approx. $85,000
- On-target earnings: $190,000–$250,000+ (uncapped commission)
- Opportunity for real estate ownership on select deals
