The Department of Criminal Justice Services ("Department") is seeking a collaborative, professional, team player to serve as Threat Assessment Program Coordinator. This full-time position is responsible for supporting the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety and training, technical assistance, and resource mandates in Code of Virginia § , § , § , and § , and other related duties. Additional duties include:
- Provide support, training, and resources for the mandated behavioral threat assessment programs in Virginia.
- Provide technical assistance to law enforcement agencies and school divisions on training, policies, and regulations relating to behavioral threat assessment.
- Assist in the development and review of a case management system to collect threat assessment data.
- Follow up and analyze data from training programs through instructional assessments and student evaluations.
- Assist in the development and implementation of resource development and dissemination through literature reviews on behavioral threat assessment.
- Assist in developing and updating threat assessment related resources from the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety.
- Work collaboratively with various law enforcement, school and campus safety related task forces and committees at the state and federal level to assist in the development of partnerships and resources for Virginia constituents related to behavioral threat assessment.
- Develop and deliver educational and informational presentations to educational groups, professional organizations, and civic and business organizations on behavioral threat assessment related topics as requested on behalf of the DCJS and VCSCS.
- Provide support to multi-disciplinary teams, boards, advisory groups, committees, associations, and commissions in the development and delivery of threat assessment case management tools, resources and publications, and training courses.
- Work independently to develop, deliver, and coordinate the threat assessment training for law enforcement agency personnel, school and campus security departments, school resource officers, state and local government entities, professional organizations, schools and colleges, and other criminal justice agencies' constituent groups throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate must possess:
- Considerable demonstrated experience in providing technical assistance on policy and programmatic issues.
- Considerable demonstrated experience in school safety programs, knowledge and principles of behavioral threat assessment, and policies and practices of threat assessment teams.
- Considerable demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of school safety and threat assessment programs.
- Demonstrated experience in liaison activities with school administrators and law enforcement management in criminal justice initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience working with Virginia local governments and state agencies.
- Demonstrated strong program management skills.
- Familiarity with public school safety and security issues, behavioral threat assessment, and related topics.
- Knowledge of the functions and operations of State Government.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite to include, but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, etc., Internet, and e-mail software.
- Ability to think strategically and cross culturally, and independently implement new initiatives and projects.
- Ability to articulate, both orally and in written form, clear and concise program objectives and goals and summarize achievements of programs in reports and other documents as requested.
- Documented experience working as an active, contributing team member, as well as an independent and self-motivated employee.
- Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines, handle multiple assignments, changing priorities, and ensure timeliness and quality of completed assignments.
- The ability to speak publicly and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
- The ability to travel overnight.
Additional Considerations
- Prior related experience serving on a behavioral threat assessment team in a K12, higher education, and/or other organizational setting.
- Prior related experience in a criminal justice, mental health, or school safety and security field.
- Prior related experience in planning and delivering training.

Interview candidates may be required to demonstrate the skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance of work. The individual may also be responsible for submitting an annual Statement of Personal Economic Interest. In addition, the selected candidate who begins original employment or re-employment in this position must serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment. The minimum starting salary is $80,000 up to $90,000. The position also includes the state's comprehensive benefits package, including telework options.
