Executive responsibility for the management and performance of the following departments: Accounting, Servicing, Underwriting, Human Resources

Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and a strategic thought partner to the CEO and Board of Directors. The CFO provides visionary and hands-on financial leadership to ensure the long-term sustainability, compliance, and mission alignment of the organization.

As the senior financial leader of a nonprofit community lender dedicated to financial empowerment and equitable access to capital, the CFO oversees all financial operations, including accounting, fund management, grants and contracts administration, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and audit. The CFO ensures that the organization's financial systems and reporting align with federal, investor, and funder requirements while supporting innovation, growth, and social impact.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Financial Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO, Board, and senior leadership to develop and execute financial strategies that support the organization's mission of advancing financial inclusion and economic opportunity.

  • Lead multi-year financial planning, modeling, and scenario analysis to ensure long-term sustainability and effective use of capital.

  • Provide clear, timely, and strategic financial reports and analyses to the CEO and Board Finance Committee, including recommendations for improving financial performance and risk mitigation.

  • Serve as a key advisor on impact investing, lending structures, and capitalization strategies to expand access to affordable financial products.

  • Contribute to organization-wide strategic planning and growth initiatives with a focus on financial sustainability, impact measurement, and fund diversification.

Financial Management and Operations

  • Oversee all accounting and finance functions, ensuring accurate and timely reporting in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit financial standards.

  • Manage cash flow, liquidity, and investment strategies to support lending operations and mission-related funds.

  • Direct preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and dashboards for leadership, funders, and investors.

  • Lead the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors, ensuring clean audit outcomes and strong internal controls.

  • Maintain policies and procedures that safeguard assets, ensure compliance, and strengthen operational efficiency.

Signatory Authority & Financial Oversight

  • Serve as the primary financial signatory for the organization, authorized to execute all financial documents, including checks, wire transfers, grant agreements, and contracts within approved limits.

  • Maintain joint signatory authority with the Chief Executive Officer and/or designated officers for transactions exceeding set thresholds as established by the Board of Directors.

  • Ensure that all financial authorizations comply with internal policies, donor restrictions, and legal requirements.

  • Oversee the establishment of secure financial authorization protocols and internal controls to prevent fraud and ensure accountability.

  • Approve disbursements, investment transactions, and capital expenditures in accordance with Board-approved budgets and policies.

  • Report regularly to the Board on all major financial commitments, authorizations, and liquidity updates.

  • Ensure timely and compliant submission of all documents requiring signature for audits, insurance renewals, financial certifications, and regulatory filings.

Capital Management

  • Oversee the financial management of the organization's loan and investment portfolios, ensuring sound capitalization and compliance with lender, investor, and regulatory requirements.

  • Partner with the Servicing, Underwriting, Development, and Investor Relations teams to manage deployment, servicing, and repayment of loan capital.

  • Ensure robust tracking and reporting of loan fund performance, loan loss reserves, and deployment metrics.

  • Support the development and execution of capitalization strategies to attract new lending capital, equity, and program-related investments (PRIs).

Grants, Contracts, and Compliance

  • Oversee post-award financial management of federal, foundation, and corporate grants, ensuring compliance with funder requirements, including Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200).

  • Collaborate with the Development and Program teams to prepare grant budgets, financial reports, and cost allocation plans.

  • Ensure timely submission of reports to funders, lenders, and regulatory agencies.

  • Monitor compliance with CDFI Fund, Treasury, and other relevant regulations impacting the organization's financial operations.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance and accounting team committed to accuracy, integrity, and transparency.

  • Promote collaboration across departments to align financial systems with operational and programmatic goals.

  • Partner with HR to manage payroll, compensation modeling, and benefits administration from a fiscal perspective.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, learning, and mission alignment within the finance function.

Risk Management and Governance

  • Identify and manage organizational financial risks, including liquidity, credit, and compliance risks.

  • Oversee insurance coverage, internal controls, and fraud prevention measures.

  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of tax filings, including IRS Form 990 and state registrations.

  • Serve as staff liaison to the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board, providing key insights and ensuring strong financial governance.

QualificationsEducation and Experience

  • CPA or MBA required. A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in financial management, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.

  • Proven experience in nonprofit or mission-driven financial institutions (e.g., CDFI, credit union, community lender, or social enterprise).

  • Deep knowledge of GAAP for nonprofits, fund accounting, and federal grant compliance.

  • Experience managing loan funds, impact investments, or blended capital structures strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated success in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management for organizations with multiple funding streams.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong strategic and analytical thinking with the ability to balance mission and financial performance.

  • Proven ability to communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences, including funders, board members, and program staff.

  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills with a commitment to equity, inclusion, and staff development.

  • Expertise in financial software and systems such as QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or MIP, and comfort with CRM and reporting platforms (e.g., Salesforce).

  • Integrity, discretion, and a strong commitment to transparency and ethical stewardship of resources.

Work Environment

This position operates in a hybrid setting. The CFO will participate in leadership meetings, board sessions, and external funder or investor presentations. Occasional travel may be required.
