The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to join our regional maintenance team in supporting safe and efficient travel across Washington's highways. This journey-level role operates a wide variety of equipment and tools to maintain and repair highways and highway structures. The position performs skilled maintenance tasks to ensure the safe movement of people and commerce and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. What to Expect

This position may require working weekends and holidays and may involve responding to emergency calls outside of scheduled hours, with a response time of 45 minutes. Employees must be prepared for emergency situations in any weather, 24/7, and may work long hours, including nights and rotational shifts. Standby and call-back may be needed occasionally.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Maintain highways and roadways by performing snow and ice control, operating plows and sanders, and applying de-icer to ensure safe travel.
  • Operate Class A, B, and C highway equipment such as dump trucks, excavators, graders, and vactors to perform roadway and drainage maintenance.
  • Perform pavement, drainage, and structural repairs including asphalt/concrete patching, culvert and ditch work, guardrail, fencing, and safety feature upkeep.
  • Install and repair roadway signs, barriers, vegetation, and landscaping while safely handling equipment and materials.
  • Respond to emergencies and incident scenes by providing traffic control, coordinating with law enforcement, and assisting with debris or hazard removal.
  • Inspect highways, equipment, and facilities; track and document daily activities in computerized systems to ensure accurate records.
  • Service and maintain equipment, tools, stockpile sites, and facilities to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Promote safety by following Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP), wearing PPE, attending training, and maintaining a safe environment for coworkers and the public.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Highway Maintenance and Equipment Operation: Experience in performing maintenance activities in fields such as highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, trucking, heavy equipment operation, or other related work.
  • Traffic Control and Safety: Working knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and the use of cones/barrels.

In addition to the above, the following are also required:

  • Possess an unrestricted Class A CDL with "N" endorsement without air brake restriction & a valid medical card and an unrestricted, valid driver's license to legally operate vehicles in Washington State.
  • Valid Traffic Control/Flagging card or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to respond to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Valid Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License
  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification
  • Crane Certification

  • The salary range listed includes a 10% Group C assignment pay for HMW2 positions in the Shuksan area.
  • Duties involve physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions, including high winds, both day and night, often near high-speed traffic. Responsibilities include manual labor, machinery operation, and working in confined spaces. There is exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and environmental conditions, including hot asphalt and potential waste hazards.
