The Site Safety Specialist Team Leader leads and supervises a team of safety specialists on large-scale construction projects. This role oversees daily safety operations, ensures compliance with safety standards, and mentors the team to achieve excellence in safety practices. The leader implements and monitors site-specific safety programs, fosters a proactive safety culture throughout the project, and promotes teamwork, continuous improvement, and risk mitigation across all phases—ensuring safety remains a top priority for all personnel and subcontractors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise and mentor a team of safety specialists, offering guidance, training, and performance evaluations.
- Coordinate daily safety activities, to promote effective team collaboration and adherence to protocols.
- Lead by example to cultivate a culture of continuous learning, teamwork, and accountability.
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with team members to deliver feedback, address concerns, and support professional development.
- Manage vacation and time-off coverage to maintain adequate safety support during absences.
- Delegate responsibilities during team members' absences to prevent gaps in safety oversight or program implementation.
- Collaborate with the Corporate Safety Manager to shape and implement company-wide safety initiatives, policies, and training programs. Recommend procedural updates based on field observations, regulatory changes, and industry best practices.
- Direct consistent application of site-specific safety programs, policies, and procedures.
- Partner with project management and subcontractors to develop and enforce risk mitigation strategies.
- Participate in early-phase project meetings and design reviews to assess constructability and safety concerns. Influence safety planning during pre-construction and scheduling phases.
- Facilitate safety training sessions, including toolbox talks, safety orientations, and emergency response drills.
- Assist in investigating workplace accidents, near misses, and safety violations.
- Ensure that all incidents are properly documented, reported, and analyzed for root causes.
- Collaborate with management to implement corrective actions and preventive measures based on findings.
- Promote and participate in safety meetings, reviews, and feedback sessions to discuss performance insights and lessons learned.
- Track site safety performance metrics and deliver regular reports to leadership.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead or participate in internal safety audits to assess compliance with OSHA regulations, Beta Engineering's corporate safety program, and client specific requirements. Identify systemic risks and develop corrective action plans, following up to ensure timely resolution.
- Collaborate with the Corporate Safety Manager to prepare for and respond to OSHA inspections, client audits, and other third-party safety evaluations. Maintain documentation and readiness.
- Design and deliver advanced or project-specific safety training modules (e.g., confined space, lockout/tagout, fall protection), tailored to site-specific hazards and workforce needs.
- Contribute to the development and execution of emergency response plans and drills. Confirm site teams are trained and equipped to respond effectively to medical, fire, and environmental emergencies.
- Advise on the selection and procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety signage, and other jobsite safety resources. Verify that equipment meets regulatory standards and project requirements.
- Attend industry conferences, training, and professional development sessions to stay current on regulations, best practices, and emerging safety technologies. Share insights with the corporate team.
- Participate in drafting and reviewing Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs) to ensure they are tailored to project hazards and comply with client and regulatory standards.
- Support the rollout and adoption of digital safety management tools (e.g., mobile inspection apps, digital tailboards, safety dashboards). Provide feedback to improve system functionality and data accuracy.
EXPECTATIONS:
- Consistently performs high-quality work within established deadlines and interacts professionally with employees, customers, and project team members.
- Operates independently while recognizing the importance of coordinating efforts with employees, teams, subcontractors, and partner organizations.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors and project management teams regarding safety and construction-related issues.
- Serves as Beta Engineering's representative on the construction site and must demonstrate an attitude and attributes that positively reflect the company's values.
- Operates a company vehicle as a requirement of the position. The Site Safety Specialist Team Lead must maintain a clean driving record and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) screening.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification – Required
- CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) – Required
- CHSO (Construction Health and Safety Official) – Must currently hold or be actively pursuing
- CUSP, ASP, or CSP – Preferred or currently in progress
- First Aid/CPR and AED – Required and must be current
- Competent Person Training in Fall Protection, Scaffolding, Trenching/Excavation, and Confined Space – Required
- Minimum of 7 years of safety experience in the construction industry, with increasing responsibility.
- Strong leadership, communication, and incident management skills.
- Experience working on complex, high-risk, or large-scale construction projects (e.g., infrastructure, energy, high-rise, or industrial)
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This position requires work to be completed in the field a significant amount of the time. Please refer to the addendum "Working in the Field" for information about requirements and conditions to be met while working in the field.
