Role Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented
Assistant Controller
to support the Firm Controller in managing the firm's accounting and financial operations. This role will play a critical part in ensuring accurate financial reporting, overseeing payroll, and coordinating accounts payable, billing, and receivables. The Assistant Controller will collaborate with department leaders and the accounting team to maintain efficient processes and support the firm's financial health. Reporting to the Firm Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day accounting and financial functions, ensuring timely and accurate reporting, and supporting compliance with accounting standards and internal controls. This role provides operational leadership within the accounting team and contributes to strategic financial initiatives across the firm.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist the Firm Controller in managing the monthly close process, including preparation of financial statements and variance analysis.
• Process payroll and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
• Coordinate and oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing functions to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
• Reconcile general ledger accounts and assist with audits, tax filings, and other regulatory reporting as needed.
• Monitor cash flow, track expenses, and prepare financial reports to support decision-making by firm leadership.
• Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in partnership with the Controller.
• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback.
• Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives, including ad hoc financial analyses.
• Collaborate with HR, IT, and other operational departments to streamline financial and administrative processes.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, tax requirements, and firm policies.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
• Minimum of 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles, payroll processes, billing, and financial reporting.
• Experience managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and reconciliations.
• Proven leadership skills with experience supervising and developing staff.
• Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
• Proficiency with accounting software and law firm management systems; experience with legal-specific systems (e.g., SurePoint, NetDocuments, or similar) preferred.
• Ability to handle confidential financial information with discretion and professionalism.
Compensation & Benefits
We offer a competitive and comprehensive compensation package commensurate with experience, including 401(k) with profit-sharing, as well as health, life, and disability insurance. The expected salary range for this position is $95,000–$130,000, depending on experience, education, and credentials.
