The director, managing corporate counsel leads a team of legal professionals primarily supporting our Partner Resources and North American retail operations organizations, defining and executing the strategy for the team's areas of accountability and developing the team to deliver on business objectives. This role involves proactively engaging with and advising senior executives, managing significant legal risks in a commercially pragmatic manner, identifying and anticipating highly complex legal and operational issues, while reaching broadly and impactfully across the organization. This is a unique role at the intersection of a complex work force, partner resources, operations, global safety and resilience, labor strategy and enterprise culture.
As a Director, Managing Corporate Counsel, You Will
- Provide high-level legal expertise and leadership across the organization.
- Advise senior executives on emerging legal and regulatory developments to inform actionable policy and operational adjustments.
- Collaborate with specialists in partner resources and operations to help define business strategy to manage legal risk in a commercially pragmatic fashion in a rapidly changing regulatory and business environment.
- Develop and implement solutions together with the business that anticipate and mitigate risks while achieving business objectives.
- Manage and develop relationships with partners and outside counsel to create strategic and innovative solutions that address issues and achieve business objectives in a cost-effective manner.
- Provide feedback and evaluate process improvements that increase efficiencies, including implementation of technology solutions.
- Provide coaching, direction, and leadership support to team members to achieve positive business, customer, and partner results.
- Hire, develop and inspire team members through a continuous improvement mindset.
- Oversee and implement legal operations, including the selection and oversight of outside counsel, and processes within area of accountability.
- Demonstrate financial stewardship through active engagement in enterprise-level financial processes, including alternative fee arrangements, annual budgeting, quarterly forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Embody and foster our culture and values.
We'd Love To Hear From People With
- JD degree and active license to practice law in applicable jurisdiction(s).
- Minimum of 15 years of relevant legal experience in employment law, with a combination of law firm and in-house legal department.
- Familiarity with labor relations desirable.
- Demonstrated experience leading legal professionals including highly skilled and tenured attorneys, paralegals, and legal support partners.

- If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
