SECTION II – THE SEAT
At CMU, we look at every position as a seat. Every seat is vital, and the individual in the seat contributes significantly to our mission of providing an affordable and accessible education and forming meaningful and mutually enriching partnerships that support the well-being and vibrancy of our community. As a human-centric organization, a priority is to ensure we have the “right seats” in our organization, and that the expectations, ownership, and accountabilities are defined and communicated clearly for the success of the individuals holding the seats.
The leader in this seat will provide leadership, direction, management, and accountability to the operations of Student Services at Colorado Mesa University. This person works collaboratively with the President and the Vice Presidents for Academic Affairs, Finance and Administration, Community College Affairs, Marketing, Facilities, External Affairs, the Foundation, and Athletics to effectively establish and meet the role, mission, and goals of the University.
OVERVIEW AND SCOPE OF TEAM AND/OR TASKS
The leader in this seat is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the following areas:
- Recruitment and retention strategy
- Campus safety and student conduct
- Mental and physical health services including oversight of the campus health clinic
- International programs
- Campus Recreation Center
- Campus Housing and Residence Life
- Student Life operations including engagement and belonging initiatives
- And any other areas/duties as assigned
These responsibilities include development of effective policies and measurements to ensure continuous program review and evaluation, and budgetary oversight of the various functional units, working as appropriate with the Vice Presidents for Finance, Academic Affairs, and Community College Affairs, as well as coordinating enrollment management. Enrollment Management includes Admissions, IRIS (one-stop advising/financial aid), Financial Aid, and programs that assist in retention for continuing students.
This position administers the contracts for campus safety/campus police, student mental health services, and student health clinic services.
As part of the expectations of this position, the person will initiate and develop relationships with community members and community organizations to promote the university and its programs.
Student Services is a RESOURCE HUB and will help all students gain access to resources both provided by the university and throughout Mesa County. This person will meet with students, parents, and other appropriate parties to resolve questions/issues about college policies and procedures relating to registration, financial aid, housing appeals, student disciplinary matters, and graduation.
These are the top priorities for this position. However, there are many more intricacies to each department that this seat oversees. Other duties and functions as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY TO RESULTS
The person in this seat will be evaluated on skills and abilities to lead, manage, and hold accountable the Division of Student Services (approximately 90 employees) for raising the level of attainment for all students entering Colorado Mesa University. This person will assist in all aspects of recruiting and retaining students with the goal of growth of 1% (FTE) each year.
Each program that is overseen by this person is highly visible and will be evaluated through the participation rates of students. Engagement should be key.
Ensure that each department has the support and resources it needs to meet the annual goals it sets for helping to attain the ultimate goals listed in the Strategic Plan.

- This position requires timely responses and willingness to be available 24/7 (unless planned vacation). GJPD is a direct contact for this person and all emergency calls will route this way when the Director of Safety and Conduct is unavailable or simultaneously.
- Excellent written communication skills are necessary as this position sends campus-wide communications.
- Must be mobile to get around campus in a timely manner.
- Must be able to drive to other campuses and property owned by CMU.
ESSENTIALS TO BE SUCCESSFUL
The position requires a master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education; an earned doctorate is preferred. Position also requires demonstrated, substantial experience managing complex multi-varied organizations.
