Description

The mission of UC San Diego Summer Session is to provide core courses needed by students for graduation from the University of California; to provide intensive and innovative academic programs not easily offered during the academic year and; to provide opportunities for ladder-rank faculty to teach in areas of student need and, when appropriate, provide opportunities for lecturers, visitors and graduate students to teach.

The Associate Director independently provides support and leadership to the UC San Diego's Summer Session and Special Programs from the office of Educational Innovation. Develops and implements operational solutions, strategies, and programs to support campus strategic initiatives. Serves as a campus experienced professional resource on Summer Session and Special Programs, consults with and advises faculty and staff in departments, programs, colleges, Academic Senate, at the Office of the President, and at other UC campuses.

Provides central planning and advocacy for new campus initiatives and policy implementation. Responsible for short-term and long-range planning and marketing collaborative of Summer Session and Special Programs. Works closely with senior managers in Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Business Affairs, Budget and Business Services, and Housing, Dining, and Hospitality (HDH) on aspects of Summer Session and Special Programs. Serves on committees representing the unit.

Provides vision, leadership, management, coordination, and solutions to the university academic Summer Session and Special Program activities and initiatives. Works directly with academic department leadership teams including Chairs, Vice-Chairs for Education, and College Deans of Academic Advising to evaluate, organize, plan and administer the operations to promote expanded opportunities and enrollments in Summer Session and Special Programs. Works collaboratively with campus student services offices such as the Registrar, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Financial Solutions, and Cashier’s Office to develop and implement enrollment, registration, and payment procedures that improve the delivery of services to the student that conform to system-wide regularization plans. Represents visiting students on petitions relating to Summer Session and Special Program enrollments, policy on integrity of scholarship issues, and student misconduct complaints.

Responsible for possessing broad job knowledge of business affairs operations for developing systems to track and report aspects of financial and enrollment data to leadership teams including the Office of the President, as well as reports required by bargaining agreements. Works with Labor Relations on reporting requirements as well any contract issues relating to Summer Session and Special Programs.

Represents the interests and capabilities of the departments’ full range of responsibilities and related activities to the campus, the University of California system, and other national audiences.

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of accounting practices, personnel, and student services in Higher Education. Uses seasoned skills and knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Demonstrated and excellent ability to work with diverse population (faculty, staff, students, and parents).
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills. Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Strong analytical skills to identify problems and develop innovative solutions.
  • Strong leadership skills; including negotiation, diplomacy, problem, and decision making. Excellent speaking skills to speak one-on-one and to groups to identify and outline effective and efficient processes for the accomplishment of shared goals involving complex issues.
  • Successful experience in principles of business planning and management. Sufficient knowledge of computer systems in order to manage services provided to students and faculty and to contribute to discussions about systems support for clientele.
  • Strong supervisory skills, including delegation, staff motivation, and disciplinary action. Skills in selecting, training, supervising and evaluating staff and knowledge of university staff personnel policies and procedures pertaining to recruitment, hiring, promotion, reclassification and corrective/disciplinary action of professional and support staff. Skills to hire, train, and provide coaching and guidance to student workers and student interns.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses. Demonstrated ability to analyze data such as budget and expenditure reports, as well as enrollment and registration information, in order to formulate appropriate administrative actions and policies.
