About the Opportunity

The Department of Biology at San Diego State University is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Marine Biology or Ecology, with the possibility of serving as the Director of the Coastal and Marine Institute (CMI).

Job Description

We are looking for an accomplished scholar with a strong research background in marine ecology, biological oceanography, conservation, restoration, or related fields.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the growth of the SDSU Coastal and Marine Institute as a center of excellence in marine research. This role includes a reduction in teaching responsibilities during the academic year to provide time for the CMI director duties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in marine biology or ecology using state-of-the-art approaches.
  • Serve as the Director of the SDSU Coastal and Marine Institute and its laboratory.
  • Mentor students in the Doctoral program and Master of Science program in Ecology.
  • Participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching missions.
  • Develop and implement inclusive excellence initiatives in STEM education.

Qualifications

To be considered, candidates must have:

  • A Ph.D. in Biology or a related field.
  • An established career with a strong research record, including extramural support and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
  • A commitment to promoting inclusive excellence in STEM education.

Benefits and Compensation

This position comes with a competitive salary range of $116,000 - $137,000 per year, depending on the rank (Associate or Full Professor). The appointee will also receive a start-up package and additional compensation during summer months using research funds.
