Since 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) has served as the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, collaborating with the Presidio Trust, partners, donors, and the community to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The GGNRA stretches across three Bay Area counties north and south of the Golden Gate Bridge and includes iconic places such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco. The Parks Conservancy engages at the intersection of national park sites, local communities, social justice, and climate resilience. About the role - Director of Facilities & Fleet
As a key member of the Operations Branch team, the Director of Facilities & Fleet is responsible for the effective management of the Parks Conservancy’s facilities and fleet, including leading the Facilities & Fleet unit within the Operations Branch. The Director will serve as a partner to the Chief Operations Officer and other members of the Operations Branch in leading facilities and fleet strategies services and support as designated and assigned.
The Parks Conservancy operates out of three types of facilities – revenue generating, program services, and administrative. With approximately 24 unique facilities spread over three counties – including incredible and historic places like Alcatraz and Muir Woods – the Director will help to ensure that our complex operations run smoothly for all things facilities and fleet. All facilities are situated within the rich natural and cultural landscapes of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), and most facilities are considered historic. The Director is responsible for maintaining the Parks Conservancy’s portfolio of buildings and grounds, all set within the National Park Service unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, as well as our fleet of vehicles.
The successful candidate will be a collaborative leader and inspire a culture of safety across the organization. This position will require adaptability, mindful listening, and empathetic and compassionate communication with staff from varied backgrounds and cultures. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Facilities Financial Management and Administration:- Tracks progress and overall budget for all projects undertaken, with project budgets ranging from $50K – $5 million. Prepares and oversees department budget; develops additional project budgets as needed. Allocates resources to maintain properties and assets. Ensures budget allocations are accurately distributed by site/branch and reflect organizational priorities.
- Leads development of an interim and long-term investment and maintenance plan for administrative and program physical plant, to include overall facilities footprint, key investment projects, and approach to ongoing maintenance.
- Maintains Work Order system to ensure timely and appropriate response to all maintenance needs. Establishes priorities and determines a timeframe for work completion.
- Scopes facilities projects and deploys staff or contractors as needed.
- Negotiates and manages all facilities service contracts. Ensures timely completion and satisfactory performance of all contracted work.
- Research new approaches to create more streamlined and economical facility operations, implementing changes in collaboration with branch management.
- Manages security systems and procedures for all properties.
- Ensure the smooth and efficient operation of our Parks Conservancy-owned fleet of 15 and 18 leased GSA vehicles while maintaining compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Ensure routine maintenance schedules are adhered to.
- Develop and enforce safety protocols for drivers.
- Optimize the number of vehicles in the fleet for efficiency and cost savings.
- Leads, trains, and directs the efforts of the Facilities & Fleet staff and associated vendors or contractors.
- Manages a team of 2-4 full-time staff. Ensures team members understand both day-to-day responsibilities and the role of the department as it relates to the effective operations and strategic direction of the Parks Conservancy and the needs of agency partners.
- Ensures collaborative team culture, encouraging open communication and creating a positive working environment.
- Promotes a culture of operational leadership and safety by ensuring staff are adequately trained, participating in Parks Conservancy and partner agency safety forums, and reporting, investigating, and translating accidents and near misses into opportunities for continued learning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- 5+ years of relevant professional experience (we are background agnostic and are excited by candidates with unique and different work histories).
- Advanced knowledge and experience in applying theories, principles, practices, and techniques of maintenance management of buildings, associated utilities, grounds, and other miscellaneous facilities.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with a variety of people, inclusive of different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, ages, and viewpoints.
- Knowledge and ability to prepare an annual financial plan, cyclic and rehabilitation work programs, and input to related management systems.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local building codes, systems, and safety practices, including OSHA.
- Track record of completing facilities-related work on time and within or below budget.
- High emotional intelligence and collaborative leadership skills, including the ability to address conflict.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in managing a diverse and interdisciplinary staff towards effective results and professional development.
- Exceptional communication skills. Speaks clearly and effectively; is thoughtful and persuasive; writes clearly and informatively; varies writing style to meet needs.
- Develops strategies to achieve organizational goals; understands organization's staff’s strengths and weaknesses; identifies external issues and opportunities; adapts strategy to changing conditions. Understands financial implications of decisions; aligns work with strategic goals.
Compensation and Location:
The Parks Conservancy provides its employees with a competitive salary that is benchmarked with other non-profit organizations in the Bay Area. Benefits include a competitive suite of medical, dental, and vision plans, up to 3 weeks’ paid vacation plus one week of personal days, plus holiday (11) and sick days (12). This position is full-time, and you must already be based in or willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area. This position requires at least 2 days per week onsite (ideally 3 days), either in office (Fort Mason) or visiting our employees on location at our incredible park sites (for example, Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and Crissy Field). The hiring range for this position is an annual salary of $120,000-$125,000 (Grade 22). The final salary within this range will be determined based on relevant experience.

Physical Requirements and Work Environments:
- This position is located at the Parks Conservancy’s headquarters in Fort Mason, San Francisco. Work is performed in an office setting; including a mix of telework and on-site.
- Work is primarily performed sitting and standing. Regularly sits or stands at a desk 6-8 hours per day.
Work requires frequent and regular travel to work locations across the San Francisco Bay Area, including Alcatraz, Muir Woods, Golden Gate Bridge, Lands End, Crissy Field, Presidio, San Mateo, and other outdoor worksites.
