Position Summary
The Automation Engineer is responsible for design and engineering of controls and automated plant floor systems in an industrial production environment. This position includes proficiency in programming for Rockwell Automation Logix 500, Logix 5000, Studio 5000, Inductive Automation Ignition platform SCADA, ABB, Maple Systems HMI, proficient PC knowledge within an Active Directory managed I.T. system, knowledge and proficiency in Rockwell Automation Stratix Ethernet switching and CPWE distributed networks, as well as Soft Starters, VFDs and motion drives of various makes and models.
Essential Functions
- Proficient in Logix based ladder logic
- Familiar with add-on instructions, function block programming and use, Ethernet module connections via EIP/CIP to ABB IRC5 based robots.
- Familiar with DeviceNet connections to ABB IRC5 and SC4+ based robots.
- Experience programming PLCs "from scratch" is preferred.
- Assists Cell Technicians in advanced troubleshooting needs for production, Root Cause Analysis.
- Coordination of new installations with contractors, debugging and commissioning of new equipment.
- Updating electrical diagrams and prints.
- Coordination with in-house and external electrical personnel.
- Assists maintenance with controls-based issues and programming.
- Design and installation of sensors and VFDs, as well as other controls equipment.

- Mentoring Cell Technicians and Maintenance Technicians in controls aspects.
Heavy Manufacturing Environment. MKC houses different machinery, equipment, processes, and chemicals which produce potential hazards in the work environment such as: ergonomic, chemical, machine point of operation, and powered industrial vehicle traffic. These hazards are controlled through means of engineering controls, such as machine guarding, and administrative controls, such as safety policies and programs. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to noisy. In certain areas of the facility, employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment such as Hearing Protection, Safety Glasses, Safety Toe Shoes, and hand protection.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, bend, or reach above the shoulders. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to regularly walk throughout all the manufacturing facilities.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on an equivalent basis.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, automation or controls engineering or similar engineering function.
- Minimum 5 years industry experience in electrical, instrumentation and industrial controls engineering required.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
- Subject matter expert knowledge in fundamental engineering concepts related to assembly, calibration, and testing of analog / digital electrical systems and / or computer networks and systems engineering processes and procedures.
- Knowledge of integration of robots to CNC machines and conveyors to automated equipment to high-pressure die casting machines.
- Design and installation of sensors and VFDs, as well as other controls equipment.
- Must be creative and flexible while still operating within the confines of a standard-work based environment.
- Strong focus on task completion, and a "self-starter" is a must.
- Experience in automating assembly processes, preferably in die casting.
- Must be proficient in PLC logic and programming.
- Strong organizational and time management prowess with the ability to work effectively to meet completion targets.
- Demonstrate high commitment to quality and ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently.
- Excellent conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving expertise.
- Ability to mentor and lead teams with outstanding communication skills.
