Job Description: MTS Materials Characterization Failure Analysis

NanoSpective is seeking enthusiastic, disciplined, and innovative applicants for the full-time position of Member of Technical Staff Materials Characterization Failure Analysis. The ideal candidate will have both a theoretical and practical understanding of structure-property-processing relationships and how materials characterization and failure analysis techniques are used to diagnose and solve a wide range of product failures. This position involves working with materials systems and microtechnologies, ranging from metals and composites to microelectronics, ICs, MEMS, and photonics. The role is well-suited for a professional who can communicate effectively with clients and collaborate with NanoSpective's technical staff to ensure the flawless execution of custom analytical services and accurate failure analysis.

 

Key Responsibilities

If selected, you will join the NanoSpective team as a Member of Technical Staff working within a rigorous culture in a fast-paced setting providing characterization and custom analytical services that help our clients. Example of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Operation of HR-SEM, LOM, EDS and FIB
  • Conduct failure analysis processes, including non-destructive testing (optical inspection, X-ray, acoustic microscopy) and electrical verification (curve trace, bench test, ATE)
  • Perform physical analysis such as decapsulation, delayering, and fault isolation to identify defects in microelectronics and other materials
  • Collaborate with clients to design and execute testing protocols and experiments that address their objectives, timelines, and technical requirements
  • Analyze and organize data from materials characterization and failure analysis tests to produce client reports with clear, impactful conclusions
  • Develop corrective action plans based on findings to help improve product quality and reliability.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis (e.g., sectioning, polishing, ion beam milling), and ensure optimal strategies for sectioning and targeting specimen sites
  • Troubleshoot SEM and other equipment, conduct routine alignment and calibration, and perform more advanced troubleshooting as necessary
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve materials processing and product failures.
  • Develop and document novel techniques and contribute to technical knowledge through research and engagement with the scientific community
  • Design & execute testing protocols and experiments based on objective, timeline and relevant supporting information for each request
  • Acquisition, analysis and organization of data to produce client deliverables that clearly and effectively communicate observations and results
  • Consultation with clients to develop analytical plans and review project deliverables

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering or similar science or engineering discipline
  • Strong foundation and industry experience in advanced materials characterization and failure analysis techniques
  • Proficiency with SEM, FIB, EDS, and other microscopy techniques for materials analysis
  • Strong foundation in failure analysis processes, including physical defect identification and electrical failure correlation
  • Experience with non-destructive and destructive testing methods (X-ray, acoustic microscopy, curve tracing)
  • Familiarity with microelectronic devices, reliability test failures, and production line failure analysis
  • Strong analytical skills, with an ability to troubleshoot complex issues and apply critical thinking to identify root causes
  • Digital literacy across various platforms
  • Experience with image processing & data analysis routines. Excellent aptitude/exceptional ability to learn new software
  • High level of technical document writing competency

 

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Materials Science or related engineering discipline
  • Experience with advanced failure analysis techniques in areas such as fatigue, corrosion, wear failure, and contamination
  • Project and personnel management experience
  • Mastery of Microsoft business applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Teams and SharePoint
  • Experience in scripting/programming, e.g., Python, Matlab, C++, etc. for data processing
  • Experience with machine learning techniques
