The 2nd Assistant Engineer is responsible for supporting the engineering department's operation, maintenance, and repair activities on board a vessel or offshore platform. This role involves assisting in the oversight of machinery, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and supporting the Chief and 1st Assistant Engineers in achieving operational efficiency. The position requires strong technical knowledge, excellent teamwork, and a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.

2nd Assistant Engineer  Responsibilities

  • Assist in the inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and electrical systems.
  • Maintain and operate pumps, compressors, boilers, and other engine room equipment.
  • Regularly monitor engine performance and fuel consumption.
  • Record and report operational data, including temperatures, pressures, and fluid levels.
  • Ensure all engineering activities adhere to company policies, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
  • Participate in emergency drills and respond to onboard emergencies as required.
  • Aid in the operation and management of the vessel's power generation and distribution systems.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer and 1st Assistant Engineer with daily operations, documentation, and planning maintenance schedules.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to junior engineers or engine room personnel.
  • Communicate effectively with deck officers and other departments to support overall vessel operations.


2nd Assistant Engineer  Position Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with 2nd Assistant Engineer endorsement.
  • STCW certification with applicable endorsements.
  • Current TWIC card (Transportation Worker Identification Credential).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar engineering role, preferably in the maritime or offshore industry.
  • Familiarity with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical equipment.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting and repairing marine machinery and systems.
  • Knowledge of maritime safety and environmental protection standards (e.g., MARPOL, SOLAS).
