Position Purpose:

The Director, Marketing and Communications provides leadership and strategic direction for the team responsible for the organization's annual fund, marketing, and communications work, aimed at inspiring community to take action to eliminate hunger in Vermont while enhancing awareness of and access to Vermont Foodbank programs, resources and engagement opportunities. The Director supervises three positions: Senior Manager, Annual Giving, Senior Manager, Marketing, Website and Design, and the Marketing and Communications Coordinator. The Director ensures annual fundraising, marketing, and communications objectives meet the organization's financial and programmatic long-term vision and annual goals. The Director leads a collaborative approach to developing and supporting the execution of comprehensive plans aligned with the organization's operational needs and strategic direction. In addition, they lead on and are an active contributor to special projects, content development, and campaigns. They are responsible for budgeting, staff development, and resourcing, as well as fostering an inclusive and collaborative team environment.


This position is a salaried position (Range for this level: $84,048 - $126,072.00 annually; hiring at the low end of the range for this position).

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Leads collaborative development of annual strategy and plans for fundraising and organizational communications and marketing needs and projects; supports execution and implementation of annual plans; analyzes and assesses impact of annual strategy and plans.
  • Generates quarterly fundraising and organizational marketing progress reports with Sr. Managers; analyzes key metrics. Provides assessments based on realistic data and feedback.
  • Supervises contracts and relationships with vendors, including VF's direct mail vendor, and other vendors and consultants as required; does not always manage day-to-day with vendors but is accountable for overall structure of relationships and support for their engagement with team members.
  • Centers people facing hunger in developing strategy and supporting team in implementing strategy; centers equity and inclusion and ensures organizational commitment to equity and inclusion in its internal and external communications channels, voice, and materials.
  • Maintains annual calendar for fundraising and organizational communications and marketing efforts in collaboration with Sr. Managers; triages requests of team, balances workloads, and ensures balanced effort across team to meet organizational goals and needs.
  • Supports coordination of messaging and organizational voice across team and ensures alignment with organization priorities, values and strategic direction; facilitates coordination and impact through collaborative editorial planning and strategy with team and organization.
  • Maintains knowledge of organizational priorities, updates, and needs and keeps team informed.
  • Provides leadership and develops systems for staff to ethically gather and share stories strategically and raise up the voices and stories of the people VF serves and works with.
  • Leads collaborative annual strategy development for both fundraising and organizational marketing and communications, including: developing segmentation strategy, identifying key audience/s, clarity of voice and messaging; alignment with organizational priorities and values, and ensuring the team and individuals have the resources, direction and framework to accomplish goals and implement plans.
  • Develops, motivates, and supervises an effective team, with an emphasis on collaboration and partnership. Responsibilities include: hiring and onboarding; performance and workload management; goal setting; conflict management; establishing back-up plans and cross-training; coaching and personal/professional development planning.
  • Contributes to fostering a culture of continuous learning and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Prioritizes staying informed about the work, needs, and priorities of the organization.
  • Represents and advocates for the needs of various audiences and direct reports.
  • Maintains current knowledge of industry best practices, ethical fundraising, and storytelling.
  • Develops and manages overall team budget in coordination with team
  • Collaborates with CPO on organizational budgeting and establishing annual and multi-year funding goals with corresponding plans.


Other

  • Writes content as-needed (newsletter, fundraising appeals, program outreach and marketing, internal communications, public relations, donor proposals, web content, etc.)
  • Primary point of contact and/or review for new content development needs for team and organization; leads response and support strategy balancing priorities, capacity and content expertise.
  • Primary support on team for internal communications as-needed
  • Works cooperatively and able to communicate with staff and volunteers to support the mission of the Foodbank to meet and sustain Foodbank goals.
  • Positively contribute to an organizational culture of safe and secure food handling, warehousing and distribution.
  • The Foodbank relies on volunteers every day to fulfill our mission. All Foodbank employees must support our culture of philanthropy by treating every volunteer with appreciation and respect.
  • This position will occasionally be required to travel to other Foodbank locations and to attend required meetings, trainings, etc. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
  • Continually evaluate established policies and procedures, and update or modify them as necessary.
  • This position is regularly exposed to organization-wide confidential information: including but not limited to: financial, personnel, volunteer and vendor. A high degree of confidentiality and discretion is required.

Skills/Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities an individual needs in order to perform this job successfully.


Education and/or Experience:

  • 7+years of experience and/or education gained in business or nonprofit fundraising, marketing, communications, project management and/or related field/s
  • 1-3 years supervisory experience
  • Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent work experience required.

  • Understanding of the socio-economic impact of hunger and hunger issues.


Language Skills:

  • Employee must have excellent oral and written communication.


Technical/Computer Skills:

  • Experience with constituent relationship management required. Familiarity with Raiser's Edge and Blackbaud NetCommunity preferred.
  • Familiarity with donation platforms (such as BBNC, Classy), and email management tools (MailChimp etc.) required; WordPress and Adobe Creative Suite recommended; familiarity with marketing analytics preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other emerging technologies
  • Aptitude for learning and using multiple digital platforms.

Certifications/Licenses/Registrations:

  • A valid Vermont Driver's License.
  • 3-year motor vehicle report (MVR) showing a clean driving record.
