Job Summary:

Kaiser Permanente seeks a skilled Respiratory Therapist II to join our team. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring the proper operation and functioning of respiratory therapy equipment. You will also be responsible for administering medical gases and aerosolized drugs, as well as monitoring patients' physiological parameters during therapy.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Initiate therapy under a physician's order and make appropriate recommendations for modalities of therapy.
  • Implement therapy for, and monitor patients while on continuous mechanical ventilators and all modes of positive pressure breathing devices. Utilize clinical and other data to assess cardiopulmonary status of patients. Assist in intubation. Provide bedside spirometry. Evaluate ventilator-dependent patients' readiness to wean.
  • Administer humidified medical gases as ordered by the physician.
  • Interpret blood gas results. Consult with attending physicians regarding appropriate therapy. Perform arterial punctures. Withdraw blood samples from indwelling lines.
  • Provide ventilatory support during special procedures. Coordinate transport of ventilator equipment.
  • Implement and monitor care of patients on heated aerosols and CPAP as per physicians' orders.
  • Develop good working relationships with laboratory, x-ray, infection control, nursing, physicians, and other healthcare workers to maintain optimum total patient care.
  • Clean and maintain all respiratory therapy equipment. Assist in maintaining adequate inventory of respiratory supplies. Conduct quality control tests on all respiratory equipment. Maintain equipment in safe, workable order; request repair when necessary.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement teams as required.
  • Monitor esophageal pressures, swan-ganz catheter data, CVP, arterial blood pressures, electrolytes, fluid balance, and intravascular volumes as they pertain to respiratory patients.
  • Perform chest physiotherapy, manual ventilation, and suctioning. Position patients to facilitate respiration.
  • Perform tracheostomy care and mouth care on intubated/trached patients. Change tracheostomy tubes as ordered.
  • Document pertinent information in medical records. Document care provided in medical records.
  • Monitor disease processes, arterial and venous catheter placement, and endotracheal tube placement via chest x-ray.
  • Communicate pertinent patient information to physicians, practitioners, and nurses as appropriate.
  • Participate in patient rounds with pulmonologists/intensivists/neonatologists. Respond to and participate in Code Blue as part of the Code team/RRT team.
  • Assist with making staff assignments based on patient acuity and staff skill set.
  • Coordinate staffing needs.
  • May act as contact for shift operational needs in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Act as a preceptor for new hires and respiratory students in all units.
  • Assist with audits of documents and RT bundles.
  • Assist with review of departmental policies.
  • Conduct in-services and competency check-offs for staff.
  • Assume on-call status as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Must have completed twelve (12) months of experience and all requirements for Resp Therapist I.
  • Functions independently with minimal supervision on inpatient units.
Education:
  • Associates degree with a major in respiratory therapy.
  • Documentation of highest level of education achieved must be provided.
License, Certification, Registration:
  • Respiratory Therapist License (Hawaii)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support from the American Heart Association
  • Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program within 12 months of hire from the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 12 months of hire from the American Heart Association
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist Certificate from the National Board of Respiratory Care

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in written communication, oral communication, interpersonal relations, customer service, decision making, problem solving, and teamwork.
