OVERVIEW:

The role of the Financial Assistance Advisor is to assist students in navigating the financial aid landscape, ensuring they receive the necessary funding for their educational journey. This position collaborates closely with admissions and academic departments to maintain student engagement and progress.

BUSINESS CONTRIBUTIONS:

The Financial Assistance Advisor plays a crucial role in ensuring students are adequately funded, organized, and ready to commence each academic term. Key responsibilities include:

  • Informing students about all available financial resources
  • Conducting thorough assessments and appropriate financial packaging
  • Ensuring timely posting of funds

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Initial Consultation with Students:

  • Provide a comprehensive overview of the financial aid process
  • Assist in completing the FAFSA application
  • Clarify documentation requirements and direct students to relevant online resources
  • Distribute a checklist of necessary documents for follow-up appointments

Financial Aid Assessment with Students:

  • Evaluate student financial needs and provide relevant information
  • Review FAFSA submissions for Title IV eligibility
  • Advise on financial aid options and eligibility
  • Verify Veterans Affairs documentation
  • Discuss available grants and scholarships
  • Review course registration timelines
  • Prepare cost estimates and discuss with students
  • Break down expenses and fees
  • Explore additional financing options if necessary
  • Gather and submit required documents to lenders
  • Input student information into the financial aid system
  • Establish comprehensive financial aid packages for students

Monitoring and Follow-Up:

  • Review monthly reports on student start dates
  • Analyze account balance reports
  • Investigate any discrepancies in account balances
  • Monitor potential loan defaults and follow up accordingly
  • Track scholarship and loan postings
  • Manage academic re-packaging for continuing students

Preparing Graduating and Exiting Students:

  • Conduct exit interviews to discuss financial responsibilities
  • Provide guidance on loan consolidation options
  • Ensure all balances are settled with the institution

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires typical office activities, including sitting, using a computer, and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Job Specification:

The Financial Assistance Advisor is primarily responsible for guiding students in securing the necessary financial resources to achieve their educational goals. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Knowledge: Understanding of finance and accounting principles

  • Experience: Background in financial aid services, mortgage brokerage, or financial lending is highly valued

Education, Experience, and Training:

A minimum of an Associate's degree is required, with a Bachelor's degree preferred. Candidates should have 2 to 4 years of relevant finance experience and a commitment to supporting students in their educational pursuits.
