The Materials Synthesis and Integrated Devices Group (MPA-11) is on the lookout for postdoctoral researchers to engage in a variety of fundamental and applied research initiatives focusing on acidic and alkaline polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs, AEMFCs), liquid alkaline electrolysis, unitized reversible fuel cells (URFCs), CO2 reduction technologies, flow batteries, solid-state batteries, and advanced electrode materials for batteries utilizing lithium, sodium, and other elements.
Research Opportunities:
Areas of exploration include:
- Electrocatalysis involving both precious and non-precious metals
- Ion exchange membranes and their applications
- Durability of components and cells
- Water management strategies
- Porous transport layers
- Cell operation and testing, including impurity effects
- Synthesis and characterization of innovative materials, including nanoscale catalysts and polymer membranes
- Development of non-aqueous flow battery materials and systems
- Advanced materials for anodes, cathodes, and interfaces in solid-state batteries
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must demonstrate a robust background in one or more of the following domains:
- Electrochemistry
- Polymer and organic synthesis/characterization
- Nanoscale material synthesis/characterization
- Microfabrication and thin film deposition techniques
- Electrocatalysis and catalyst development
- Electrode design, fabrication, and evaluation
- Electrochemical testing methodologies (fuel cells, electrolyzers, etc.)
- Experience with lithium metal anodes, silicon anodes, sulfur cathodes, and solid-state electrolytes
Additionally, candidates should possess:
- An excellent publication record in relevant fields
- Strong proficiency in spoken and written English, along with effective communication skills
- The capability to innovate and implement new research concepts and conduct advanced experimental work
- A strong motivation to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research setting
Educational Background:
A Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline is required, preferably completed within the last five years or nearing completion.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in:
- Electrochemical characterization of electrodes and catalyst/electrolyte interfaces
- Organic and polymer synthesis, including composite preparation
- Synthesis of nanostructured carbon materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and non-precious metal catalysts
- Fabrication and characterization of lithium metal anodes, silicon anodes, and solid-state electrolytes
- Electrochemical device testing across various applications
- Familiarity with advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, TEM, XRD, etc.)
- Mathematical modeling and electronics knowledge
- Organizational skills to meet project deadlines
Work Environment:
This position is based onsite at a multidisciplinary research institution dedicated to national security and energy innovation.
Compensation:
Competitive salaries are determined based on the completion date of Ph.D. requirements. Starting salaries for new graduates are currently set at $94,500.
