Position Overview:

We invite applications from dedicated and enthusiastic Genetic Research Scientists to become part of the Department of Human Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University. Our laboratory is focused on pioneering innovative genetic and pharmaceutical methodologies, encompassing cell and gene therapy, small molecules, and biologics aimed at treating solid tumors. Our research initiatives also delve into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development and progression, forming the foundation for ongoing and future drug discovery efforts. The Genetic Research Scientist will play a pivotal role in designing, executing, and overseeing research experiments aligned with these themes, while also managing laboratory administrative tasks in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.

Key Responsibilities:
Diligently gather and evaluate data from laboratory experiments and collaborative studies Organize and coordinate animal usage and testing within the laboratory, ensuring adherence to established standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements Facilitate timely procurement of laboratory chemicals and supplies by team members Implement enhancements in all facets of the research conducted within the group Update laboratory equipment control software as new versions are released, ensuring optimal functionality of devices Provide technical training to technicians, graduate and undergraduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in laboratory techniques and proper equipment usage Contribute to personnel evaluations by providing feedback to supervisors Ensure the integrity of testing processes and compliance with university and external regulatory bodies (IACUC, IRB, OEHS, DEA, etc.) Act as the liaison for university compliance offices and prepare all necessary materials for inspections Assist the Principal Investigator in drafting and refining manuscripts for publication in scientific journals Engage in independent research projects with guidance and support from the Principal Investigator Stay informed about historical and contemporary scientific literature relevant to the laboratory's research activities Present new findings during regularly scheduled laboratory meetings Maintain bibliographic databases for reference and use in reports and publications Minimum Qualifications:
A master's degree in a biomedical or related science field is required; Ph.D.-level candidates are highly encouraged to apply Familiarity with relevant scientific literature, laboratory protocols, and practices involved in biochemical, molecular, and whole animal research Proven medical writing and composition skills, demonstrated by published scientific reports and manuscripts Experience with laboratory animals and proficiency in small animal surgical techniques are essential Competency in statistical and graphing software is required A demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in previous roles or a commitment to doing so as a staff member at VCU Preferred Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in a biomedical science or neuroscience with a strong foundation in biochemical and molecular methodologies (e.g., cloning, developing CAR NK/T cells) Documented managerial experience suitable for coordinating and managing multiple studies concurrently The School of Medicine continuously strives for our workplace and learning environment to reflect the demographic and social milieu of the communities we serve.
