Job Overview:
The Outside Buyer is tasked with visiting the facilities of both current and prospective suppliers within designated regions, including demolition contractors, scrap dealers, auto wreckers, and construction sites. This role is pivotal in generating purchases of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
The Outside Buyer actively seeks new sources of scrap, fostering relationships that lead to the procurement of various grades of metals. Acting as the primary representative for the organization, the Outside Buyer communicates effectively with the General Manager and facility managers to ensure that purchases align with production needs and the overall buying strategy for the region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain customer/supplier relationships.
- Negotiate prices and contracts to enhance and retain the supplier base.
- Possess a thorough understanding of costs related to the purchase of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, along with current market trends to implement effective pricing strategies.
- Inspect storage piles to assess the quality of delivered materials.
- Maintain constant communication with the Commercial Operational Manager and leverage the resources within the Commercial Support Group for bid preparation and job costing.
The Outside Buyer is expected to allocate approximately sixty percent of their workweek to visiting new suppliers and nurturing existing relationships, while the remaining forty percent is dedicated to marketing and administrative tasks as directed by the Commercial Manager.
Reporting:
The Outside Buyer is responsible for providing weekly action reports.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing or Business is preferred.
- 5+ years of prior industry sales experience or 5-10 years of experience as a metal buyer in the scrap industry.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Knowledge of testing and identifying metal alloys.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
- Proficiency in Windows XP, including Outlook.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage with individuals at all levels.
- Excellent mathematical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong negotiation skills and attention to detail.
