Long Beach, California, United States Relativity Full time

Company Overview:

At Relativity Space, we are driven by two ambitious objectives: to establish a premier commercial launch enterprise with Terran R and to emerge as a frontrunner in additive manufacturing innovation in the United States. Both initiatives are integral to our overarching vision of creating an industrial foundation for humanity on Mars, facilitating the expansion of interplanetary life and enriching the human experience. This transformative journey commences on Earth, where we design, construct, and launch rockets to transport customer payloads into orbit. Our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, Terran R, addresses the increasing demand for launch capacity through an iterative approach that enhances design, testing, and development while reducing costs. Our pioneering research and development in 3D printing also pushes the limits of large-scale additive manufacturing.

About the Team:

This position is part of the Engine Systems & Test Team. Our responsibilities encompass simulation and software tools, system-level architecture, requirements, and interfaces, as well as component and integrated system hotfire testing. We work in close collaboration with component engineers, our manufacturing team, the Stennis test team, and the Cape launch team to deliver engines that will effectively propel the Terran rocket into orbit. We are committed to continuous improvement and support the advancement of both our technical hardware and our team members.

About the Role:

This position may involve various aspects of our team based on your expertise and the current needs of the team. Core responsibilities include driving engine system architecture and CONOPS trades, managing engine interfaces, and negotiating requirements to optimize for the vehicle, as well as supporting overall engine system development. Additional tasks may include engine system analysis and simulation, engine testing, tool development, and more. In this highly technical role, you will be expected not only to coordinate and facilitate among other technical teams but also to apply your own substantial technical knowledge to address challenges.

To excel in this role, you should be capable of leading collaborative projects to successful completion with minimal supervision. A self-starter mentality and a desire to enhance your knowledge of interfacing systems are essential. Alongside these high expectations, you will have the opportunity to significantly impact a rapidly growing startup and achieve swift professional development in an environment that fosters growth and innovation.

This role requires an average of 15% travel to our test and launch sites and may occasionally necessitate adjusted schedules or weekend work for critical milestones.

About You:

  • Bachelor's degree in a science, engineering, technology, or mathematics field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience, ideally in a complex engineering system development and/or testing environment
  • Strong engineering fundamentals in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
  • Proven track record of ownership, problem-solving abilities, and effective team collaboration from academic or professional experiences
  • Demonstrated commitment to meeting ambitious deadlines, particularly when unconventional and creative solutions are required
  • Familiarity with liquid-propellant rocket engines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with fluid components such as valves and instrumentation
  • Understanding of engine subsystems including combustion devices and turbomachinery
