Overview

The Lead Biomedical Equipment Management Specialist plays a crucial role in the Biomedical Engineering Department by offering leadership, direction, and oversight to designated personnel. This position is responsible for providing both clinical and administrative assistance to staff, patients, and management regarding all aspects of comprehensive life-cycle management of medical devices.

Key Responsibilities

Biomedical support necessitates the application of engineering principles and mechanical methodologies to ensure effective lifecycle management and technical assistance for diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring equipment utilized in healthcare settings. The lifecycle management includes:

  • Technology Assessment: Identifying requirements and evaluating alternatives in collaboration with clinical users.
  • Technology Acquisition: Conducting technical evaluations and determining the best value for proposed equipment and systems.
  • Technology Implementation: Overseeing site preparation, incoming inspections, integration of devices/systems, and training for clinical and technical staff.
  • Technology Sustainment: Ensuring regular maintenance, upgrades, and ongoing education.
  • End of Useful Life Management: Handling decommissioning, data sanitization, and technical evaluations prior to disposal.

The Specialist is responsible for maintaining medical equipment in accordance with established local, regional, and national policies and standards set by various accrediting organizations.

Essential Duties

Manage lifecycle processes for a variety of medical systems, including imaging, life support, and monitoring equipment. Responsibilities include:

  • Executing both routine and complex tasks related to the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of sophisticated medical devices.
  • Collaborating effectively with other facility support departments, such as Facilities Management and Information Technology.
  • Utilizing standard testing equipment, including electrical safety analyzers and multimeters, for performance evaluations.

Conduct advanced testing and troubleshooting of medical devices and their connections to information systems, adhering to established guidelines throughout the process.

Leadership and Management

Develop policies for the Biomedical Engineering department and local facility as required. Responsibilities include:

  • Setting goals and objectives for the medical equipment management program and monitoring progress.
  • Analyzing and planning workloads among team members according to established workflows.
  • Assigning daily tasks to staff, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and accuracy in completed work.

Provide insights to management regarding the status of critical medical equipment that may impact patient care.

Budget Management

Contribute to the annual budget for the unit and oversee expenditures throughout the fiscal year to ensure resource availability.

Work Schedule: Standard working hours with no telework options available.

Requirements

Applicants must meet specific qualifications, including U.S. citizenship, proficiency in English, and relevant educational and experiential backgrounds in biomedical equipment management.

This position requires adherence to all employment conditions and participation in mandatory health programs.
