If you are dedicated to providing hope and healing through compassionate, innovative, and tailored care, we invite you to explore the opportunity outlined below.

The Advanced Peer Support Specialist II engages in intricate peer support activities and is an integral member of the recovery team.

This role involves delivering peer support services to individuals facing mental health challenges, forensic commitments, and/or substance use disorders. You will serve as a role model, demonstrating personal recovery competency.

The Advanced Peer Support Specialist undertakes a variety of responsibilities for peers across all age groups, from young adults to seniors, assisting them in regaining independence within their communities and mastering their recovery journeys.

You will empower individuals to take charge of their recovery process by supporting their immediate and long-term needs. Additionally, you will assist in the recovery team planning process and act as a consumer advocate, providing essential information and peer support.

As part of your role, you will lead educational sessions for organizational staff, committees, and community groups. You may also provide training in trauma-informed care, recovery models, or person-centered approaches. Transportation of individuals for transitional outings may be required. This position operates under general supervision, allowing for moderate independence and initiative.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist individuals in developing communication, social skills, problem-solving abilities, and self-help techniques. Share recovery stories and model successful recovery strategies.
  • Provide peer-to-peer support in articulating personal recovery goals in both one-on-one and group settings. Collaborate with individuals to identify and create actionable recovery plans.
  • Complete all necessary documentation, focusing on services rendered and the individual's engagement in the recovery process.

Documentation includes:

Identification of person-centered strengths, needs, abilities, and recovery objectives, along with interventions to assist individuals in achieving their recovery goals.

  • Lead educational panels for staff and community organizations, sharing recovery resources and participating in continuing education opportunities.
  • Facilitate the integration of individuals into their communities by connecting them with existing peer support groups and assisting with discharge preparations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activities, which may require shift adjustments.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of the recovery process, person-centered care, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Ability to teach and engage individuals in basic problem-solving strategies to support self-directed recovery.
  • Familiarity with the signs and symptoms of mental illness and the ability to utilize personal experience to address these challenges.
  • Knowledge of community resources essential for independent living and the ability to guide others in accessing these resources.
  • Skills in establishing and maintaining peer support groups and understanding peer philosophy and recovery models.
  • Proficiency in using technology and software relevant to the role.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively support individuals in achieving their recovery goals.
  • Ability to operate a state vehicle safely when required.
  • Capacity to work effectively with individuals in challenging situations.
