Role Description

The ideal candidate will occasionally visit client sites to foster relationships and understand their needs.

Are you passionate about energy and sustainability? This role is designed for an industrial energy systems equipment engineer/analyst with expertise in industrial energy systems, which may encompass industrial heat pumps, thermal energy storage, and particularly, grid integration and power generation technologies. This position will support the Department of Energy's Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) Cross-Sector Technologies (CST) program. Key responsibilities will involve strategic planning, analytical support, technical advising, and research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) program assistance.

In this role, you will gain valuable insights and contribute to advancements in technologies, policies, and R&D trends within the industrial energy sector. You will work in a collaborative environment, engaging directly with government program managers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the technical expert on industrial energy systems, effectively synthesizing and communicating research findings related to energy applications in industrial sectors through formal presentations and written communications.
  • Assist in the planning and management of the Industrial Process Heating and Emerging Technologies RD&D portfolio.
  • Lead small-scale research projects and provide project management support for federal clients.
  • Work independently or collaboratively as part of a team, taking the lead on smaller research initiatives.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of federal technical programs, focusing on goals, implementation plans, and budget considerations.
  • Transform technical information into clear planning and summary documents.
  • Develop and implement performance metrics for client projects and programs.
  • Collaborate closely with program managers and colleagues in a dynamic team environment, providing insights on industry-relevant demonstration opportunities for decarbonization through energy systems technologies.
  • Collect and analyze program and project data, summarizing results in draft reports.
  • Evaluate global market and technology trends related to energy, carbon, and economics.
  • Act as a liaison between academic researchers and government decision-makers to clarify key technical outcomes and their potential impacts.
  • Support both in-person and virtual meetings with clients and stakeholders, including preparation of materials and facilitation of discussions.
  • Assist clients in preparing technical reports required by governmental authorities.
  • Help clients create educational materials for public dissemination.
  • Occasional travel for participation in technical conferences and networking with the technical community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (chemical, mechanical, or a related field) with 7 years of experience or 5 years with a Master's degree.
  • Familiarity with IEDO programs and relevant technical topics, particularly in Cross Sector Technologies and emerging technologies RD&D.
  • Experience in industrial energy systems, including operational knowledge of industrial heat pumps, energy storage, and power generation; familiarity with grid integration and industrial process engineering.
  • Strong communication skills, including technical writing and the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Interest in manufacturing, industrial sector decarbonization, and the clean energy transition.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly advanced analytical and Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage self-directed tasks and work effectively in a team.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Located in the Washington DC area.
  • Experience in industrial environments is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of decarbonization strategies for process heating.
  • Strong networking and collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with energy efficiency or energy management systems in industrial settings.
  • Experience with complex enterprise architectures is a plus.
  • Advanced degrees (Master's or PhD) in relevant fields are advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Experience in government consulting or public-private partnerships is preferred.
  • Proficiency in virtual meeting platforms such as Teams, Zoom, or WebEx.
  • Published technical work in energy systems, power generation, or thermal management is a plus.

Compensation:

Target salary range: $91,100 - $120,000 per year.
