Job Summary

The Patient Access Apprentice is a key member of our healthcare team, responsible for scheduling, pre-registering, registering, and admitting patients to our hospital. As the first point of contact for many patients, you will convey a caring and professional attitude, ensuring a positive experience for all visitors. Your duties will include determining insurance coverage, eligibility, and performing pre-authorization procedures. You will also maintain patient care unit control for all bedded units, provide comprehensive financial counseling, and establish and monitor each patient's account prior to their visit, during inpatient stays, and up to 5 days post-discharge. Additionally, you will ensure the accuracy of patient identification numbers and demographic and financial information used to create electronic bills. Your excellent communication skills will enable you to inform patients of estimated financial responsibilities and collect up-front payments and co-payments based on estimates.

Key Responsibilities

* Schedule, pre-register, register, and admit patients to the hospital
* Determine insurance coverage and eligibility
* Perform pre-authorization procedures
* Maintain patient care unit control for all bedded units
* Provide comprehensive financial counseling
* Establish and monitor patient accounts
* Ensure accuracy of patient identification numbers and demographic and financial information
* Inform patients of estimated financial responsibilities and collect up-front payments and co-payments

Requirements

* High school graduate or GED preferred
* Health industry experience preferred
* Customer service experience in a clinical setting preferred
* Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment and perform multiple tasks simultaneously
* Keyboard and data entry skills required
* Computer experience with Microsoft Word, email, and internet communication
* Ability to deal effectively with verbally offensive and/or distressed patients and their families
* Analytical and complex problem-solving skills
* Mathematical skills to calculate financial formulas
* Strong customer service skills with sensitivity and intuition to detect hidden stresses and problems
