Position Overview:

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is a renowned and dynamic research institution that significantly contributes to our understanding of the cosmos.

Our facility operates advanced radio telescopes globally, including notable installations that allow astronomers to delve into the universe with remarkable precision.

The NRAO is currently seeking a Facility Maintenance Worker to join our Engineering Services Division. This role involves maintaining cleanliness and order within all Observatory buildings with minimal supervision. The position may also entail providing general security oversight for both the premises and surrounding grounds.


Key Responsibilities:

Maintaining cleanliness in offices, hallways, restrooms, elevators, stairways, and other workspaces through activities such as sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors. Responsibilities also include washing windows, door panels, and sills; emptying waste receptacles; transporting trash to disposal areas; and replenishing restroom supplies. Additional tasks may involve cleaning carpets, furniture, and draperies as needed, as well as documenting any property damage or unusual occurrences for supervisory review.

Groundskeeping duties include litter control, sidewalk sweeping, and trash collection. The role may require securing entrances, sounding alarms, or contacting emergency services in case of fire or unauthorized access.

Facilitating entry for authorized personnel and communicating safety warnings are also part of the job. The worker will patrol the site to ensure the safety and security of all buildings and grounds, reporting any suspicious activities or irregularities such as fire hazards or unsecured doors.

This position involves collaboration with the Maintenance or Engineering & Services team, with additional duties assigned as necessary.


Work Environment:

In this role, the employee will work both indoors and outdoors, occasionally at heights exceeding 5 feet. The ability to carry equipment, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and operate various tools is essential. The employee must be capable of lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds and must possess a valid driver's license.

Specific vision capabilities include the ability to read labels and identify various cleaning chemicals. Exposure to fumes from cleaning agents may occur.


Qualifications:
  • A high school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least one month of relevant experience and/or training.

Successful candidates will demonstrate effective decision-making skills and the ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and through written means. Proficiency in basic computer tasks, including email and data entry, is required.


Additional Information:

Selected candidates must successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug screening. Failure to pass will result in disqualification from employment consideration for a specified period.
