Position Overview

The Ultrasound/Vascular Technologist I role at Houston Methodist involves performing a range of standard diagnostic and vascular ultrasound examinations, including both routine and specialized procedures of moderate complexity. This position is integral in assisting physicians during various diagnostic and specialized ultrasound/vascular interventions, ensuring high standards of patient care and adherence to established protocols for safety and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fosters a collaborative and positive work atmosphere, contributing to a cohesive team environment that strives for optimal departmental outcomes. Engages with all members of the patient care team through effective communication and comprehensive reporting of relevant patient information.
  • Utilizes peer accountability to enhance department goals related to staff retention and engagement.
  • Communicates proficiently to ensure the highest quality of service is delivered during every interaction with patients and customers.

Service Delivery

  • Conducts diagnostic ultrasound procedures, including both common and specialized exams, and performs vascular ultrasound assessments utilizing high-frequency sound waves to produce images.
  • Proactively evaluates and addresses patient needs to optimize care, image quality, and overall patient experience, including positioning and technical adjustments as necessary.
  • Assists physicians during diagnostic or specialized procedures, ensuring adherence to sterile techniques.
  • Provides clear explanations and instructions to patients and their families, utilizing appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Quality and Safety Standards

  • Adheres to safety protocols and conducts all imaging procedures in compliance with established standards. Maintains sterile techniques and follows infection control policies diligently.
  • Reports incidents and near misses through the appropriate safety reporting systems to enhance processes and identify trends for improvement.
  • Performs routine quality control checks on imaging equipment to ensure functionality and safety prior to use, reporting any issues to management.
  • Employs critical thinking to monitor and respond to patient reactions during procedures, seeking assistance when necessary.

Documentation and Resource Management

  • Ensures accurate and thorough documentation of patient procedures, entering charges promptly upon service delivery.
  • Manages resources efficiently, demonstrating self-motivation and effective time management skills.

Professional Development

  • Engages in departmental projects and governance activities, taking responsibility for personal growth through participation in training and continuing education opportunities.
  • Seeks to expand knowledge and skills beyond baseline competencies, focusing on ongoing professional development as a Technologist.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited educational program recognized by the relevant credentialing body.

Experience

  • No prior experience required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in OB/GYN, Abdomen, or Breast, or equivalent certifications in Sonography and Vascular Sonography within specified timeframes.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Skills and Competencies

  • Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to perform the job safely, as assessed through ongoing evaluations.
  • Proficient in English communication, both written and verbal, essential for patient and team interactions.
  • Basic computer skills required for operating various hospital information systems.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision, actively participating in problem-solving initiatives.

Work Environment

  • Uniform: Scrubs required.
  • On-call duties may be necessary during emergencies.
  • Travel may be required within the metropolitan area.
