Job Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Public Defender Assistant. As a key member of our office, you will play a vital role in providing zealous representation to our clients in Albany's local and County courts.

Responsibilities
  • Engage in frequent court appearances and litigation, including arraignments, grand jury presentations, legal arguments, hearings, and trials.
  • Interview clients and their families, and visit clients at Albany County Correctional facility.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with team members from our Office (investigators, criminal defense caseworkers, etc.).
  • Conduct legal research and write pre-pleading letters, motions, and pre-sentencing memoranda on behalf of clients.
  • Provide effective oral advocacy in negotiations and arguments in criminal cases.
  • Responsiveness and ability to communicate clearly with clients who are often under great stress.
Requirements
  • Must possess a demonstrated commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, social justice issues, and/or the Albany County communities.
  • Must possess the high level of organizational and administrative skills required to handle a challenging caseload.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate with District Attorneys.
  • Ability to engage in purposeful dialogue with clients and others.
  • Ability to interact with Defense Attorneys, Judges, Probation and Parole Officers, and Correctional Personnel.
  • Ability to interface with community-based treatment, educational, vocational, and other alternative programs.
  • Ability to write persuasively.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
