We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated LGBT Legal Advocate to join our team at In Our Own Voices, Inc. (IOOV). As a key member of our organization, you will play a pivotal role in promoting justice and equity for LGBTQ+ communities in the Capital Region.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and Distribute Culturally Sensitive Resources: Create and disseminate legal resources for LGBTQ+ individuals, with a focus on People of Color, to ensure they have access to essential information and support.
- Build and Nurture Relationships with Justice Systems: Foster strong partnerships between IOOV and local courts, law enforcement, and other justice systems to ensure fair treatment and support for LGBTQ+ individuals.
- Collaborate with Community Partners: Work closely with other community organizations to provide relevant and culturally competent services, connecting clients to essential resources and referrals.
- Outreach and Advocacy: Conduct proactive outreach to LGBTQ+ communities, raising awareness about their legal and civil rights, and providing direct support and guidance to community members.
- Support for Survivors: Collaborate with IOOV team members to support clients who are survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, providing comprehensive support and advocacy services.
- Additional Responsibilities: Undertake other responsibilities as assigned to advance IOOV's mission and provide robust advocacy for the communities we serve.
We are seeking a candidate with:
- A deep commitment to IOOV's mission and core values of equity, justice, and empowerment for LGBTQ+ communities.
- At least 2 years of direct experience in human services, particularly in roles involving advocacy or support for marginalized communities.
- Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including staff, clients, and volunteers.
- Demonstrated experience handling sensitive issues and building strong, trust-based relationships with community partners.
- Strong teamwork skills with a positive and proactive approach to contributing to a collaborative work environment.
- Effective problem-solving skills with the ability to address and resolve concerns or challenges thoughtfully.
- Reliable transportation with a valid NYS driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and a clean driving record.
We also welcome candidates with:
- At least 1 year of experience working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence, especially those engaged in legal systems, with demonstrated advocacy skills for underserved communities.
- A 4-year degree in a relevant field is preferred; however, equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Self-directed with strong advocacy skills and the ability to work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective outreach, reporting, and client support.
- Ability to navigate and work with diverse personalities and work styles, maintaining a positive and productive environment.
- A solution-oriented mindset with proficiency in data collection, reporting, and analysis to support program development and client advocacy.
- Strong problem-solving abilities to identify, address, and resolve issues efficiently.
