- Innovative Design: Develop industry-leading closure systems focused on cost efficiency, weight reduction, and enhanced functionality.
- Project Management: Oversee the packaging, engineering, release, and launch of all closures within the Mahindra portfolio, which includes side doors, hoods, decklids, charge ports, hardware, and mechanisms.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary marketing, design, and vehicle engineering team, prioritizing the overall benefit of the vehicle over individual systems.
- Supplier Engagement: Partner with closure suppliers to ensure technical excellence and timely delivery of Mahindra's closure systems.
- Tool Development: Implement and enhance efficient tools and innovative methodologies to support development processes.
Key Responsibilities:
The Manager for Closures Engineering Design (BIW & Mechanisms) is tasked with supporting and executing a robust vision, strategy, and business plan for a diverse and expanding team. This team encompasses two primary groups: 1) Closures Mechanisms 2) Closures BIW.
The successful candidate will possess extensive automotive experience, capable of leading the design and development of various vehicles that meet or surpass global and local customer expectations from concept through to lifecycle production, while also pioneering new technologies and adhering to the highest safety standards.
- Strategic Leadership: Formulate, communicate, and implement the vision for the Closures Engineering Design Mechanisms & BIW Team as directed by senior management, aligning with Mahindra's overarching goals and objectives.
- Business Management: Achieve all key performance indicators (KPIs), including program timing, cost and quality improvements, intellectual property management, budget adherence, personnel development, and corporate culture enhancement. Establish goals and objectives for all direct reports.
Lead initiatives and projects to support the team's work plan, ensuring all objectives and budgetary allocations are met for the Closures Engineering Design Mechanisms & BIW R&D budget.
- Team Management: Facilitate the annual teamwork plan and budget in alignment with Mahindra Detroit's Engineering team's vision.
Oversee tasks and projects that align with the team's work plan.
Ensure that administrative functions such as purchasing requests, timecards, vacation requests, and travel requests are processed promptly.
- Vehicle Development Expertise: Serve as a subject matter expert in Automotive Closure Mechanisms & BIW Systems (e.g., latches, strikers, handles, gas lifters, power lifters, manual testing for closure mechanisms & BIW system designs, particularly for electrified vehicles). Ensure adherence to the vehicle development process from concept to post-production, fulfilling all customer requirements. Conduct competitive benchmarking, detailed engineering cost/weight analysis, manage drawing releases, execute engineering orders, and meet safety and regulatory targets. The Closures Mechanism & BIW Manager will also oversee the release of all drawings by the Closures Mechanism Team Engineers.
- Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement: Advocate for both internal and external customers. Foster collaboration with affiliates such as Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, and corporate headquarters. Engage effectively with all levels of personnel, from engineers to executives, establishing strong relationships across the board. Collaborate with local teams and headquarters, providing support as needed with testing, development, and vehicle clinics.
- Technology Development: Assist in the assessment and development of new technologies. Support the creation of technical roadmaps and strategies aimed at implementation in production vehicles. Liaise with various testing and development laboratories, providing assistance for new technology research and adoption projects.
- Effective Communication: Collaborate with other teams within Mahindra and its affiliates, including Product Planning, Propulsion, Vehicle Test and Development, Electronics, and Manufacturing. Aid in the creation of presentations for upper management, summarizing key activities and plans. Regularly review progress against work plans and quality standards, providing technical direction and guidance. Maintain and update project status reports accurately and routinely review them with senior management.
- Budget Management: Support the development of the R&D budget, ensuring optimal resource utilization. Monitor expenses as the first line approver, identify opportunities for savings, and support project and strategic investment decisions related to all R&D activities.
- Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned. Travel may be required up to 20% of the time, both domestically and internationally.
- Managerial Duties: Manage, train, evaluate, and support recommendations for hiring and pay adjustments. Delegate and oversee work for team members. Provide instruction and training in methods and procedures. Address complaints or grievances. Conduct performance evaluations and competency assessments.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (minimum), with a master's degree preferred.
- 12-15 years of experience in automotive vehicle design and development, with increasing levels of project and team management responsibility.
- 3+ years of experience managing an engineering department or section.
- Significant expertise in automotive areas such as closures moving, closures mechanisms, CAE, testing, quality, and production launch.
- Experience working in a culturally diverse team environment and a willingness to learn new interaction methods.
- Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States; verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire.
- Proficiency in CATIA, CAE, or similar systems.
- Expertise in project management.
- Flexibility in adapting to program and process changes, with a willingness to make adjustments to meet customer needs.
- Advanced skills in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
