GENERAL FUNCTION:

We are seeking an experienced leader responsible for overseeing one or more specialized accounting teams, which may encompass various accounting functions such as Line of Business (LOB) accounting and Shared Services. This role includes managing accounting projects, ensuring the accuracy and detail of accounting records, and preparing financial statements and specialized reports.

Accountability for risk management is paramount, involving open communication of ideas and concerns, adherence to policies, and a commitment to ethical practices that enhance customer and colleague experiences. While working within the Bank's risk framework, you will achieve results by consistently identifying, assessing, managing, monitoring, and reporting on various risks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead teams to effectively meet operational goals.
  • Benchmark team performance against established standards.
  • Evaluate team members by setting performance metrics and comparing outcomes.
  • Oversee staffing, performance evaluations, and compensation for team members.
  • Ensure the maintenance of intricate accounting records and related functions.
  • Guarantee compliance with schedules and operational objectives tied to month-end closing.
  • Prepare management reports relevant to team responsibilities.
  • Supervise daily entries, account monitoring, and balance maintenance.
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Ensure adherence to financial control policies, including reconciliations.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Identify and implement process enhancements.
  • Utilize technology to boost efficiency and productivity.
  • Recognize opportunities for refining accounting processes.
  • Address technical accounting issues by consulting with the Accounting Risk and Policy Group.
  • Manage special accounting projects relevant to team responsibilities.
  • Oversee assignments related to acquisitions, divestitures, and system conversions.
  • Respond to inquiries from auditors, regulators, and management regarding team responsibilities.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with peers and management across various functional areas.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide timely, constructive feedback to employees; support their development and career growth; ensure a robust talent pool for succession planning; and recognize employee achievements. Directly manage accounting staff and supervisors.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics is required; MBA or certifications (CPA, CMA, etc.) are strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of accounting or related experience is required, with banking or public accounting experience being advantageous.
  • Previous management experience is essential.
  • Proficiency in advanced spreadsheet applications is necessary.
  • Ability to learn and understand financial systems such as TM1, Managed Pay, GEAC, and Frontier.
  • Exhibit Fifth Third Leadership Competencies, including Strategic Agility, Change Leadership, Talent Optimization, and Community Involvement.
  • Considered a subject matter expert in the field.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of effectively conveying information to all levels of the organization.
  • Possess in-depth functional expertise and broad business acumen.
