WIRED is at the forefront of envisioning a better tomorrow. For over thirty years, we have been the essential resource for navigating a world in perpetual change. We address humanity's most pressing issues, from climate change to global security, from pandemic readiness to the future of democracy, while sharing the narratives of individuals striving to tackle these challenges and the role that science and technology can play—both positively and negatively. WIRED engages more than 30 million individuals each month through our digital platform, print magazine, social media, and live events.

Position Overview

Location:
New York, NY

WIRED is on the lookout for a seasoned editor to spearhead our business and industry journalism. Reporting directly to WIRED's executive editor for news, this senior management role encompasses oversight of a team of over 12 reporters and editors across our U.S. and U.K. divisions.

In this capacity, you will oversee both overarching strategies and intricate details. Collaborating with WIRED's senior leadership, you will formulate and continuously refine editorial strategies that yield impactful results across various coverage areas; you will devise coverage plans focusing on technology firms, influential figures, and significant events, while managing a budget and a roster of freelance contributors. You will work closely with senior editors on your team to execute your strategies and plans, and partner intimately with audience development to enhance the reach and influence of the journalism you supervise. Frequent collaboration with WIRED's digital video team will be essential to deliver cross-platform coverage that showcases the best of WIRED on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram Reels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, propose, and execute content strategies and planning for WIRED's Business section.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to establish goals and priorities for your areas, ensuring all content initiatives align with broader brand objectives.
  • Actively seek out diverse and compelling voices to enhance WIRED's distinctive business and industry coverage.
  • Work with audience development to analyze audience engagement metrics and leverage this data to continually refine content strategies and outputs.
  • Oversee all projects from conception to execution, including: assigning, tracking, and editing stories from staff and freelancers; managing budgets; collaborating with design teams on visuals; proofreading and addressing fact-checking and copy inquiries; guiding stories through production; and partnering with social and/or video teams to maximize story impact.
  • Achieve individual and/or section KPIs as assigned (e.g., production targets, user engagement, time spent, and other related goals).
  • Identify and collaborate with global markets on relevant stories or packages.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of editors and reporters across the U.S. and U.K., including overseeing hiring, talent development, and performance management for direct reports; establishing clear processes and communication channels; delegating tasks effectively; and fostering a transparent, respectful, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
  • Contribute to brand extensions, social platforms, and additional projects as required.
  • Represent the brand publicly as necessary, including on social media, in press opportunities, panels, speaking engagements, and internal presentations.
  • Engage in additional projects/stories as assigned.
Desired Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience as an editor in a dynamic, digital, and news-oriented environment, with at least 3 years in a management role.
  • A robust portfolio demonstrating significant experience covering the tech industry, with a proven track record of breaking news.
  • Experience overseeing multi-platform content from ideation to execution; adept at balancing daily deadlines with long-term projects and delegating effectively to maximize team impact.
  • A passion for delivering ambitious coverage, particularly around Big Tech, AI, and other core focus areas.
  • Skilled in guiding editors to conceptualize stories and assisting writers in achieving their best reporting and writing; capable of structuring stories for maximum impact and reader engagement.
  • Highly collaborative with excellent communication skills; proficient in working with a diverse team of fact-checkers, copy editors, designers, digital producers, social media producers, and story editors.
  • Exceptional time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Open to candidates from various locations.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $125,000.00-$160,000. Salary offers are determined by a variety of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
