Position: Principal Design Engineer in Instrumentation and Controls (I&C)

Job Summary:
This role is crucial for delivering comprehensive administrative processes, technical expertise, and leadership in the field of Instrumentation and Controls. The selected candidate will oversee specific project areas, ensuring technical precision throughout all project phases.
This position involves leading engineering assignments of considerable complexity and providing guidance to fellow engineers and designers.
Key Responsibilities:- Act as a Supervising Lead under the guidance of the Discipline Lead Engineer, mentoring junior engineers and designers.
- Evaluate and recommend independent technical solutions to complex problems in line with project specifications.
- Draft and assess specifications and design criteria.
- Conduct engineering analyses and calculations; select materials, equipment, and systems; resolve intricate technical challenges.
- Collaborate on technical matters with other disciplines, project management, vendors, and clients.
- Ensure compliance with the Project Quality Plan and procedures.
- Adhere to the approved project scope, budget, and timeline.
- Prepare and review estimates, schedules, and progress reports, including effort-hour estimates and staff forecasting.
- Monitor and report on key material quantities; provide analytical forecasts.
- Support procurement and subcontracting activities, including scope definitions and technical evaluations.
- Assist in construction administration, addressing requests for information and field modifications.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Bachelor's degree in Control Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant experience.
- Professional Engineer license.
- Familiarity with applicable federal, state, and local codes and standards.
- Effective communication skills for diverse audiences, including project management, colleagues, clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Technical knowledge pertinent to the role.
- Advanced understanding of discipline-specific codes and standards.
- Capability to work in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Attention to detail and efficient time management skills.
- Intermediate proficiency in computer software, including word processing, email, spreadsheets, and presentation tools.
- Extensive experience in providing engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for large industrial projects.
- Expertise in executing large EPC projects utilizing engineering analysis, 3D modeling, and 2D CAD tools in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Conduct a wide range of I&C design tasks, including control systems architecture, digital systems, PLC, DCS, and process controls.
- Perform sizing calculations for control valves, relief valves, and other instrumentation.
- Create instrument indices and datasheets, generate reports, and oversee design wiring and loop development.
- Develop detailed control systems specifications and logic diagrams.
- Engage in model reviews and monitor 3D modeling activities.
- Review specifications for DCS, PLC, and SIS hardware and software applications.
- In-depth knowledge of material costs and availability.
- Experience designing systems for nuclear facilities under ASME NQA-1 standards.
- Proven track record in managing and leading large-scale projects.
- Familiarity with project setup, control-level scheduling, and project close-out processes.
- Practical field experience.
Proficiency in EPC projects for:
- U.S. Department of Energy or other federal agencies.
- Nuclear facilities adhering to quality assurance protocols.
- Manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology sectors.
- Expertise in Bentley MicroStation, Autodesk AutoCAD, and Intergraph SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI).
- Instrumentation specification and procurement activities.
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) representation and control strategy development.
- Safety requirement specifications for Safety Instrumented Systems.
- Experience in Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) reviews.
- Commissioning and startup experience for DCS, PLC, and SIS.
